The Old Folks Home

Does my dog aim to please or what? Could tell she was ancy last night, slept on the couch by her..she is in a kiddie pool. Nothing last night. Then around 4 this afternoon, things got going. 4 puppies. That's all? I'm thinking what? This is a Golden R. I wouldn't be surprised if she has another one tonight, but I think she's done. These will be some fat and sassy pups with all of that milk to themselves. Two blacks, each separate sex, two creams, each of separate sex. Black with white spot on chest, boy. Then, Pure black girl. Cream girl next then cream boy. I was hoping for some goldens. Oh well..they are doing well, mom too.

Congratulations Cynthia12!

Is there a rule that puppy pictures cannot be shared on chicken-threads?

If not, please do share some pictures when you get a chance; would love to see them

[Note: I think I am pretty safe requesting puppy pictures, have seen some strange/weird & wonderful stuff in our Random Ramblings .. lol]

puppy pictures are mandatory

out of respect for my mourning period, cat pics are banned for another seven days.

my msg sardines were consumed so our feral feline population has been reduced.

Oz, the first moon video was hilarious. And I'm glad to hear that your poultry poacher has been dealt with. (Now you just have to put out the baits 8 more times...). And the curry sounds a lot better than MSG noodles.

Cynthia, congrats on the pups! Keep an eye on mommy though, if you were expecting a couple more, chances are there are some. From the colors it sounds like the litter wasn't deliberate, so might be that she managed to miss the best days for breeding. And yes, pictures!

Wisher, I like that you talked it through with your son. I'm not going to pretend like I have any idea about how to raise children, but I hope you also mentioned the fact that sexual curiosity is a normal thing, and didn't shame him too badly.

Linda, now I'm craving deer. Reindeer butchering season will begin in Lapland soon, I might look into getting half a reindeer. Rudolph fry and mashed taters, yum!

@LindaB220 Since you showed some interest in the dish, it's time for another segment of Cooking and Carpentry with Felix again.

Läskisoosi ("Blubbergravy")

1 kg (2 lbs) pork belly strips (the kind that look like thick bacon without the smoking and salting)
4-5 large onions
2 tblsp rye flour (or wheat if you don't have any)
salt
pepper

Put a cast iron pan on maximum heat, and a larger pan on low heat. When the pan is hot, place pork belly strips in it so that they cover the bottom (like frying bacon). When they start to get some color, turn them around a bit, and once they start to get a bit crispy, pour some water (maybe 1/4 cup) in the cast iron pan, and then pour the meat and water mix into the larger pan once it starts to boil. Keep repeating this until you've fried most of the meat. For the last few batches, don't rinse the pan with the water but leave the fat in there instead, just lift the pork strips out of it and into the larger pan. When all the meat is fried, turn down the heat to a low setting, and throw the sliced onions to cook in the pork fat, sprinkle a bit of salt on top of them to bleed them. Once the onions are really soft, sprinkle the rye flour on top of them, keep frying for about a minute to give the flour some color, and then repeat the water step again, and pour it in with the meat. The pan should now have a nice mix of onions and pork floating in fatty water. At this point you should place it on very low heat (you can put some pennies between the hotplate and the pan if you have a electric stove), and cover the pan with a lid after seasoning with pepper and salting to taste. Let it cook on very low heat for a few hours (or even half a day). Serve with mashed potatoes (some chopped onion and butter is nice with the mash), and lingonberries (or cranberries in a pinch).

I'm still a few days behind in catching up but I wanted to comment on a few things.

I'm so sorry to hear about your set back with all those chicks, Oz! You will prevail though! I agree with the others, you bounced back after losing Bernie, do you can do this too! I just hate to hear it for you. :-(

What a beautiful pie SCG! I tried to do a nice lattice like that before and it's tough!

Great joke, CC!

I was too big a fan of the horror movies and shows as a kid! I remember watching Dark Shadows with my mom, Alfred Hitchcock, Tales from the Crypt, Tales from the Dark Side, all the zombie, vampire, Frankenstein, etc movies that I could get ahold of! Do yeah, had plenty of nightmares, mostly with slow moving zombies coming after me, but I could always get away, at least! I always had to close my closet for so nothing could get me and I was definitely of the school of thought that as long as I was under the covers and didn't have an appendage hanging off the side of the bed, then the monsters couldn't get me. That is really weird that a lot of us thought the same thing, and I know I didn't talk to other children about it.

We have too many predators, plus a rambunctious dog of our roommate's, to key my chickens free range, and I would consider it cruel to just throw them out there! I do want to make some chicken tractors very soon though!

I always giggle at your jokes Bama, and I laughed out loud over the emus in your closet and under your bed :)

And lol at chickisoup for the pet pigeon giving everyone a heart attack!
