The Old Folks Home

I've made a few of these in my lifetime, too. Super easy and wonderful.

Those little pies in a jar look real good. Thanks for sharing I will have to try some.

Quote: They sound wonderful, to bad you don't have a camera. I would love to see them. Congrats on them!

And I hope that your Swedish Flowers arrive in great shape!

I need to get a shingles shot. Been putting it off. I used to enjoy a rum and coke now and then. But only a few sips once a year or five.
Enjoy your new birds!

That apple pealing technique is really cool. I got my dad one of those apple pealing and slicing things with a hand crank for his birthday a few years ago, it's pretty useless but I always get him something fun looking and useless for the kitchen. This method seems a bit quicker though.

Man..wish you were close by, I will have to take a photo of our apple trees! You could come and get all you want. They are loaded this year just like the cherry trees were.

I wish, I would love to try some of the varieties that you have out there. I'll be there 1 October, send some with Dsqard!

I have one of those useless apple peeling machines, too. The best thing we've found so far is a really sharp peeler with a wide top instead of the old long narrow peelers.

It makes pretty quick work of the apples. Used about half a bushel of apples yesterday for various concoctions and the last time I went out with peels and cores and chickens looked at me like "you've got to be kidding me." That's when I know it's time to stop for the day.

I really got taken in today! A man showed up in my driveway blowing his horn nearly time for my DH to be off work. Well he introduces his self telling me he has spoke to my DH and that DH told him we had chickens and all kinds of animals here. He said he had a lone duck that he needed to re-home and he acted like he had already discussed it with DH and so I said ok. He asked if I had something he could use to bring it to me in? I gave him a cage to use and he said he would be right back. I was talking to myself wondering why DH would agree to take in a duck? I don't have anywhere to put a duck! What am I suppose to do with a duck?
So in about 10 min. he came back with the peking duck. He did not get out of his truck so I got the cage and the duck and he left. I only had one pen with a pool so I was hunting boards to use for the thing to get in and out of the pool when DH drove up. I asked him why he didn't call me to tell me he was sending me a duck. DH said what are you talking about I did not send you a duck and I did not talk to anyone! So I told DH what happened and he told me I had been taken in that the guy never talked to him about any duck. And to make matters worse all my chickens are terrified of it! I do not have any empty pens and this duck is a drake and won't even lay any eggs! What am i going to do with a duck???
When you said you got taken, I was sure you were going to say he took your cage and never came back. That would be getting taken.
You didn't get taken, you got dinner.

The Pita Pintas are so friendly too!
So are penedesencas - NOT!

I'm not a chicken pet person though so they suit me just fine.

... But I do have one of those tools currently holding a door open. Pristine condition even.

...
I guess my day is complete. I came home and had a nice bourbon and coke. Arby's onion rings for supper. Too hot for more.
A cool down is coming.

We had a hand crank apple peeler that bolted onto the side of the harvest table. That was my job on apple butter weekend. I could keep 8 adults with paring knives busy coring and slicing. All day Saturday was cutting apples. Sunday was cooking them down over an open fire in the big copper kettle like this one http://www.ebay.com/itm/331312835471?ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&fromMakeTrack=true
We'd do 20 bushels of Jonathans.

this is the kind we had

it worked great

The one I got my dad was one that peals the apple, removes the core, and makes a giant spiral out of the apple. If you cut it in half, you get perfect slices, so if you're making pies, it is actually useful.

I am with you on the pet vs work chickens. I really like the penedesencas because they are not needy.

I have a pampered chief apple core and peeler. It works very well and has two sizes of cranks for thin or thick slices. I use the thick one.
