The Old Folks Home

Here's how it's done here! If you look closely, you can see the birds I bought......yeah, not really.

Yes!

Thousands of birds.

The last chicken show I went to was at our Del Mar fair... never saw the judging but I would guess there were a couple of thousand birds there.

I get a little wierded out though thinking about going to one again. Especially now that I have chickens... Um er intend on getting started again.... Its that bio security deal.

I know all the birds at a show are closely inspected for disease and parasites in order to show.... But the people that go to those shows may not have done due diligence in their own flocks or changed out shoes or gear.

I got this way going to chicken meetups.

One of the things that makes me not ever having had a sick chicken aside from environment is their isolation.... to Chicken born diseases. Yea I know wild life can bring in lots of things... and i wont be so lucky some day.... But I dont vaccinate nor do I order chicks vaccinated. Any new chicken that comes to my place is quarantined and observed before introducing them to the flock.

I would love to go to a chicken show, but also worry about bringing something home to my flock. If you bathe, change clothes, and give yourself a few hours after you return home before interacting with your own flock, wouldn't that cut down on transmission a lot? I really want to go to one, but would never put my girls at risk.

I understand the concern, but I just don't wear coop shoes to the show. I make sure to wear shoes that I know never go to the coop. If I take birds, or buy birds, they are quarantined for three + weeks, during which time they are treated for internal and external parasites. All cups, crates, and other equipment is washed or sprayed down with bleach or Oxine as soon as possible after unloading.

Okay, it's about taking extra precautions and steps to protect your birds. Really thinking about going to a show in Oct.

And, I assume, potentially broody hens are no longer allowed access to the van?
