The Old Folks Home

I am at the "wet" market in kabankalan. It's an experience all should have.. There is a rice trader to my right. We bought a 50kg sack of rice for 1800 pesos. That's about 38cents per pound. In the Philippines that's very cheap.

The country imports rice. There are some good varieties here but Thailand has better rices.

Its the bits that are left behind from brown, or whole grain rice that we feed our chickens - rice bran.

A rice cooker is great but we limit electrical appliances as its too expensive to run when I can achieve the same time results in a non stick 2 quart pot.

I boil water on the stove to make coffee, then put the remainder in a thermos to use during the day.

I got very confused with all those abbreviations earlier.

Back in the eighties a friend of mine was doing a lot of pioneering research on lactobacillus. It's fun to see her hard work come to fruition.

Well, I got the coop cleaned and filled my compost.

Coop after emptying and brushing every surface a bit.

Here's the new bedding I got, I think it's a bit too dry for you, Bama.

Coop all filled up.

Here's what the chickens have done to the salad patch after we let them have it.

Veera and Wilma, the broody monsters, checking out the new bedding.

They quickly settled into their nests, we took the reserved sickbay space into use as an extra nest while those two silly girls are occupying the nests.

Looks very nice and such pretty girls.

Karin just left for a weekend of dog activities, so I'm home alone with one labrador, one dachshund, and 7 chickens. I intend to take advantage of the opportunity once again, and make some chili today, something Karin can't stand. Also, if previous signs are correct, we are going to get our first egg from Emma this weekend. So far each and every one of our chickens has started laying when Karin has been away for the weekend. So that's something to look forward to.

Also, I'f anyone's interested in the hemp bedding, I just started a new thread about it, where I intend to document my experiences with the stuff:

Canada doesn't use the Bovine growth hormone in beef production, but we might use others. Also no hormones in dairy production.

How much does that bedding cost you vehve? Or I should say how much will it cost you?

Think I'm going to do fermented feed as a primary food, and the dry stuff in one of those button dispensers for some entertainment this winter. There's a person on here trying fermented veggies for her birds also sounds interesting. And another person freezing dandelions to feed out through the winter...
