Alaskan wouldn't even call this snow. It was just a few flakes. Just something that would shut down Heathrow airport, the Greek road system or Los Angeles. Can't even see the flakes on the ground anymore.

Well, I'm off to change some tires, then I'll try to make some carrot-ginger-coconut milk soup.
 
Welcome back bama....and pass the fish, although I really prefer speckled perch. Heck, I'd even make the hush puppies, and grits to go with them. Yes, you can reuse peanut oil, and it doesn't rancid as fast as vegetable oil unless you heat it higher than it's flash point, and it's got a good flavor too. Coconut oil is the best for making popcorn. My grandfather used a trotline for turtles, and catfish. I wouldn't use one for predators. Very inhumane even for varmints.

That bread looked delish, and brought back memories. I used to make bread all the time when the kids were growing up. I'm not even sure where the dough hooks are now. Dh and I don't really eat bread anymore. I keep warning my daughter to pick, put up, and cook fresh foods for her family instead of the processed stuff. She's gotten a bit better at it.

That particular daughter was very afraid of chickens. She has gotten over it for the most part, and has started helping me out at the coop. I'll have to buy her, and my grandson some rubber boots next payday.

My grandson insisted he wanted a big pumpkin this year. He picked out a very large one for himself, and a little one for his baby sister. He was so happy. Sometimes it doesn't take much to make a kid happy.
 
Speaking of coconuts.

We produce enough copra to mill into about two tons of oil each year.

I have plans for a press to make cold pressed virgin coco oil but no time to initiate it.

We do produce oil at home by grating ripe coconut then using heat to separate the oil. The non oil liquid is used as coconut milk for Asian dishes. The oil is heated to just about 105f then used as a hair and scalp spa treatment.

Bernie ran up a tree this lunch time and gently lowered a dozen young coconuts. Jun opened them and Mrs Oz scraped out the snotty flesh. The coconut juice and flesh is mixed with powdered skim milk and placed in cylindrical plastic bags about one inch around and seven inches long.

150 of these 'agogo' then went into the freezer for healthy Popsicles.

During mango season we do the same with blended mangoes.

Oh yummmmm.

I only got one car done, because Karin was home late from work. So that is waiting for tomorrow. The run temperature just went below freezing 15 minutes ago. Chickens are looking cozy in there.

The soup turned out quite nicely, something that might suit your palate, Oz.

Carrot-ginger-coconut milk soup

3-4 lbs carrots
3 shallots
2 cloves of garlic
2 tsp grated fresh ginger
½ cup of coconut milk (or more if you really like a strong coconut taste
chicken stock
curry
sweet chili sauce
salt
some parsley (or actually cilantro if you're into that)

Chop the onions and the garlic, throw in a deep pan with some oil on low heat, sprinkle a dash of salt on top to bleed the onions. Chop the carrots and add them to the pan after the onions are soft. Add the ginger, curry and chicken stock (enough to just about cover the carrots), bring to a low boil, and let it cook. Once the carrots have cooked, add the coconut milk and process it through a food processor. Boil it up again, season with the chili sauce, and add the parsley or cilantro.

 I started looking at Homer on Google maps, you have some funny streetnames. In the midst of Fairview, Soundview, Spruceview and Rangeview Ave:s, there's also Noview Ave. Hidden Way sounds funny too. Homer Spit campground doesn't sound too welcoming though, and it looks like it's pretty exposed. And is that a coal dumping port next to it?


One of the layers of earth around here, is coal. So, any erosion and big chunks of coal drop out. The result is that after every high tide there is a nice line of coal that is easily collected from the beach. It is dirty coal to begin with, and then sea salts are added to it, which makes it dirtier...but it is free, and produces excellent heat, so people use it.

However, a big dark pile on the spit is probably just a giant sand pile, the city keeps it there, so people can go get it and use it to sand their driveways.

The Homer Spit has excellent views, but it IS exposed. It used to be about 7 feet higher, but it dropped lower after the big Good Friday earthquake.

As to street names...that ticks me off. We used to have a bunch of invisible roads, but the borough has been working hard to name the driveways, and get everyone to have addresses on only real existing roads. :rant don't kniw what the fuss was about, FedEx and UPS were able to find all the addresses. (It was funny the one time the UPS driver had a substitute... :gig she was SOOOOO lost!!!)
