The Old Folks Home

To my understanding, Svarthöna is from the border between Sweden and Norway, and it was basically raised as a landrace there, so I'm guessing they would be pretty close to our Alho landraces or the Swedish Flower Hen. You can look at how our Alhos have been laying in my egg chart.

Peep, once you're older and wiser it's easier to know what you want. But I'm a bit worried when people get married at 18 or 19, that is a bit too quick in my opinion.

At 18 or 19 they don't what makes a good mate and they aren't equipped to make those decisions yet.

I see a felony in the making - all to become a thousand-aire lol

I cant be involved. I have a reputation to consider

Lol, well it's legal up here... Guess I'll go it alone ;)
Morning everyone :frow
ok, so, I was 100 posts behind.  Do you guys have ANY idea how wild the topic swing was????     Not even going to attempt to jump in on them, nope nope nope.

Great coop page Alaskan.

Does anyone know anything about the Swedish Black (or Black Swedish?) breed?  I guess GreenFire managed to import some from England.  All I know is they are cold hardy, of course.  What about laying?   Are they as "sparse" as the Cerami's ?

All I know is there not cheap.... And supposedly more rare.

maybe a 5o'clock somewhere shadow lol

I was already supposed to have my svart honas, but they got cooked in the 'bator then they all went broody with no eggs to hatch... so I have to wait until spring to add those.

They are supposed to be more cold tolerant, less flighty than ayam cemani and less gamey looking. I think my ac look like little black vultures before they get their comb in.

My ac are from Mike Bean's non Smithsonian line. I got them from byc member kerstiens (sp?). She has 18 more eggs in her bator atm, and just re-homed her ac roo, as she just got a breeding pair from gff a month or so ago. She has more hatching eggs available for sale right now, as the bator is full. Please don't make me take her blackest babies in 2.5 weeks.

Btw my ac are inside under lock and key, cameras, security system that was designed and installed by the guy who did the new Denver city jail a few years ago set up my security. We had a theft about 5 years ago from my indoor medical garden, which is why our property has so much security. Good for me with my fancy chickers. I'm probably going to go ahead and get something to electrify my fence for any critters that might think that they want to dine on my birds.

There was a layer of frost this morning on the ground. Winter is coming.

On Saturday, we have friends coming to help us get ready for winter, ie: get the cemani/bresse coop/pen built, chip the rest of the wood that is in the yard, and reinforce the predator proofing for the meatie/muscovies pen/area. Freezer camp might get moved to this weekend. 10 muscovies eat way too much for my feed bill, plus a few are just ridiculously huge. Unfortunately those are the 4 newest ones I keep second guessing myself on my scovy sexing skills, they are supposed to be 5 months old. When I first saw them I thought they were half drakes/ducks, and I think that the dark chocolate and the light brown/smoke one are ducks, the pied and the black one are drakes

can anyone tell me if my guessing is correct? I need to thin my flock asap. I can keep 3-4, ideally I'd like to just keep 1 drake. I had hoped one drake was chocolate so I could have sex linked ducklings in the spring. Agh.

Thousandairs lol. Canada also has a ban from importing birds/eggs from Indonesia. That seller knows that, it's likely you will send the $140 and your eggs will stay in quarantine in customs until they are destroyed. Fwiw, don't waste your time and energy with that seller trying to say you can import eggs from Indonesia in either Canada or the US.

I gotta get moving and make this coq au vin today!! The big old rooster has been marinading in 1.5 liters of Rex - Goliath free range red wine. I just need to break him down into even mote smaller more manageable pieces.

Any tips on peeling chicken feet? I'm jonesing for awesome stock and to make paella soon.

We're taking Grace my silver fox x nzw doe on Saturday. I have the second feeder and water bottle already. My bf needs to build me out 2 grow out cages to have ready for when the bunnies have their litters ready to move out, and I doubt my bf is going to want to deal with trying to cut 1/2" hardware cloth off the roll when snow is on the ground and making rabbit hutches.

I do not use the chicken feet but do use the neck, along with all the bones. It makes great stock. I use one of my pressure cookers.

DK, just curious, what exactly is free range wine?

I haven't tried skinning the feet, but I think you might be able to peel them off like a glove if you make a slit in the direction of the foot and try to start peeling it, making the slit longer as you advance.

Is that where you're whining while outstanding in your field?

We held a couple chicken processing classes at my house last winter and there were people that were willing to use all parts of the bird. A couple took the feet home and made a great gelatinous stock from them that they raved about. It helped that we used a plucker so they started out pretty clean.

Thanks! I usually get peeled chicken feet at the Asian supermarket.

Free range red from rex - goliath is a blend of all their red wine grape varietals from what I understand. It's pretty fruity and drinks easy, and is $8.99 fir 1.5 liters, which is a great deal I think.
