The Old Folks Home

One of the best things for learning is to join a hatch a long.

The first official BYC hatch a long will be the New Years day hatch a long.

You already know the host for that one.

Thanks, will do... Think I'll order it now.... If I'm really lucky the last of marshmallows eggs might still be viable...

My thoughts on thermometers...

I use the stc-1000 series thermostats. They are very accurate right out of the box but I do calibrate them in ice baths.

My thermometer is a second stc 1000 prove inside a water wiggler.

Hey! We are all chicken people here! Chicken related topics are not off the table - nothing much is! Maybe we should do an Old Folks Hatch along....... if interested, PM me your next set date and I'll see if there is enough interest.

You may or may not realize that this thread was born of a hatch along...........

Seems so weird that you can't have other kinds of birds....chickens are the loudest ones, aren't they?

I live nowhere near Whistler or Calgary...BC is just one big bunch of mountains... Not sure what range that pictures of, it's near Williston lake, out in the serious middle of nowhere boonies where DH works at a logging camp.

Geese are pretty loud. Guineas and Peas are very loud.
The main thing is they wanted no poultry at all. I just came out with all guns blazing including residents, area chicken keepers, TV and paper reporters and my family's history with poultry in the community, which predated the city incorporation by 100 years. I overwhelmed them and they relented.
They figured they could appease me by allowing me to continue business as usual but preventing branching out. They were right.

I have a friend that's a Chiropractor in Calgary.

I am sorry but this thread discussing temperature, humidity and turning just does not seen right.

Why, cause we're too old to be thinking about reproducing?

Count me in on the hatch along. I have my eye on some lavender americaunas. I am also planning on more isbars, cclegbars, and a few more Marans. At the moment i have 36 chickens

Last time i asked she charges a dollar an egg. Her only requirement is you come and get them as soon as they hatch. but even at twice that I would be good.

Is that $1 per egg set, or per chick hatched?

I was thinking of charging .25c per set egg and then another $1 per chick hatched. So, if someone brought me two dozen eggs, and I got a 90% hatch rate

they would give me $6 up front, then another $21 for the 21 chicks. That would be $1.30 per chick. On the other hand, if they were having fertility issues, and only half hatched, they would pay $18 for 12 chicks or $1.50 per chick.

That seems fair to me. What do y'all think?

I think she charges per egg no matter wether it hatches or not.... Now I am curious I am going to PM her....
