The Old Folks Home

On incubation, I have a GQF cabinet incubator. I bit the bullet and forked over what it took to get it. I have to admit, it made me a bit sick to my stomach when I did it, but today, I am totally over that money and it was TOTALLY worth it!! It is LITERALLY "set it, and forget it" easy. I like to take the eggs out on day 20 and let them hatch in the styro-bators for cleanliness sake, but I have to admit that there have been more than a couple of chicks in the bottom of the cabinet because I just didn't think about them for weeks. I have no regrets in spending that money.

I'm a poor struggling new home owner..I just managed to sneak my chicken coop and stuff into things........trying to figure out a super economical egg incubator atm I hesitate greatly buying something when I might decide I just dont like hatching and incubating my own eggs..just something to wet my feet so to speak...........

and ok I keep seeing everyone speaking about cleaning the incubator out..mind you I have never had live chicken hatching before experience............when I did the quail was just a bit of shell.....do chickens do something even more messy somehow?? is there some kind of something makes the incubator so messy besides the hatching eggs?

After they hatch the chicks somehow spit out a super cloud of tiny chick down and dust. It flies everywhere.

PICTURE TIME!!!

My youngest! Isn't HE cute in pink?

And some photos of my driveway as I drove into town today. It is a long driveway, and very twisty and there fore there are many different views as I drive down.

The side of my house as I passed it this morning.

Some hatches are messier than others. The problem with hatching in the Brinsea octagon is the dander that gets up into the fans. Mine has 4 fans and a bunch of plastic and screws to get up into them.

The hovabators are very easy to clean. I take the bottom, wire and water tray to the bath tub and give them a good soaking and then lysol anti bacterial cleaner. I let it dry out and then am ready to hatch.

The top gets sprayed with lysol and then wiped down. I use an air duster to clean out the fan and sensor and when it gets too dirty I take it apart and brush out the electronics.

Your son is adorable..
I really do not envy your weather…love to see snow fall, but gone by the next day is my dream.

lol first thing I did was wake up n race outside to check see if I had another egg I thought I didnt then spied it :) I'll have to do a size comprision from the large eggs from store and her eggs what kind of layers do you have?
My Isa brown's, a Sebright bantam, have been laying for months, and now a couple of Barred Rocks ,Dom's, and a GLW. We might have a SLW laying too.

an air duster? is that like the canned air you use for your puter to blow out the dust and stuff? when I was breeding cockatiels they had sooo much dander I can understand the dust issue..hadnt noticed a bunch of dust issue with the chickens so far but maybe it's more for the newly hatched and developing feather shafts that develope so fast maybe? I dunno :)

ok here is another question.. I have seen how some ppl prefere to hatch their own eggs to avoid mareks? Now I am not sure exactly why and how this might be it's kinda on my list of chicken research stuff which seems to be growing everyday!

part of why I want to do the two more coops in the spring.. I want one for a chicken quarrentee area and also maybe as a hen and chick brooding pen..and want to do a tractor I can use both for several meat birds in spring to grow out n fill freezer and to move my chickens around in the non fenced area's in my front yard and garden area's (even potentially onto a raised bed so they can till and munch the weeeds or veggies that are done before replanting

and on a side note.. I been studying my chickens closely the last couple days and BOY are their feathers getting a high gloss and looking great......the condition showing up from the free range and yummy goodies they have been eating is shining thru their feathers what a vast difference it makes
