The Old Folks Home

When my son saw the coverage of the incident to which you are referring, he said, "I bet he took the orange tip off. Momma always said that could happen. Didn't his momma tell him?"
The initial report I heard did say the orange tip was removed. Not smart.
I haven't seen one of those. The only ones I've seen were all orange.
I don't think an orange tip is enough even if intact.

When I was a kid they were black or grey.

As a kid, we used to play with airsoft guns. Those things look exactly like real guns, same shape and size, and they're copied off of real weapons. With a cop car approaching, I think all of us would of have had the common sense to throw down our weapons though. That would be a tough call for a cop.

On a lighter note, I feel like singing a Johnny Cash song. Or at least one line from Fulsom Prison Blues.

"I ain't seen the sunshine since, I don't know when."

LOVE this Johnny Cash song, but there's one thing that is confusing about it: If you shot a man in Reno, Nevada, why are you in prison in Folsom, California, for it?

Yep... sounds like me the first few times I tried to butcher the birds....

I decided that since I was only one person, I wouldn't do the ax method that I had always done as a child... I would kill them properly, and humanely, and make sure that they bled out well.

HAHA!

My first few times were very much like yours, but maybe even worse.

And I kept hearing myself laugh at myself, and say things along the line of "Humane huh? This is HUMANE? huh? Wow, you could have maybe managed a worse job, but I am not sure how"

Needless to say... after MANY attempts doing it other ways, we have gone back to chopping the heads off with an ax. Because dude, the blood might not have drained, but the beast *IS* dead! Glory hallelujah!

So, @LindaB220 I feel your pain, you can get better, you just need more practice... and maybe a month to recover!

Last night, I was struggling to get around. Took a muscle relaxer and this morning I've been cleaning out the coop. And raking. I so surprise myself with the things that I can do and not the things I can't do. I don't know until I try. I moved in with my DD and her family almost 3 years ago. It was a stopgap to try to get me better. I thought I had maybe 6 mo left. Little did I know that being with a loving family and getting happy would rock my world. Every year I do something new. Always planning. My stamina is great.

Does any one use killing Cones? It seems like a good way to restrain so you can use both hands to get the deed done. When I move home there will be no help. I expect to be processing Gunieas occasionally as well as the extra roo or hen on occasion.

I like the idea of bleeding out it would be a good addition to homemade dog food... or chicken food treats.

Plus I would like to give blood sausage a try. especially If I process several birds.

Thank goodness there are classes here on it all you have to do is provide a bird.... I have watched it on You tube both the Cone way as well as the one that does the bird in her lap.... I think the cone would be better for me.

As far as sharp knifes I been looking at this site....

for killing
http://www.cornerstone-farm.com/accessories/knife-killing-3-blunt/

for eviscerating
http://www.cornerstone-farm.com/accessories/knife-eviscerating-3-1/

The knives are sterilizeable and sharpenable and they have everything from scalpels to different kinds of knives for butchering.

Yeah, the killing one is what I need. I bought a fish filleting knife and it's 6" long and not sufficient.
