The Old Folks Home

FINALLY! Whew! OK, here is my grandmother, born 1913, on the home place in the Hill Country of Texas, surrounded by a flock of turkeys. I have no idea what kind.

I like this, and look, she has her cute little basket..wonder if those turkey eggs were yummy.

@perchie.girl

deb, how can you tell the horse had 'Scratches'?

And, could you guess what kind they are?

Yep, love that photo... so I took the time to scan it, even though we have no idea who it is.

Definately lean Percherons.... Working horses tend to have spare bodies... Muscle needed very little fat. But they are in good shape.... Healthy because they are shiny....

Scratches is a nasty ailment.. Once dug in the skin turns to three or four times its normal thickness, Causing the hair to stand out and the skin will get a ripply look because its begginning to loose its attachments... or get loose... They are painful to the touch... So doctoring it is an ordeal... But they are infected by a combo of nasty stuff, Bacteria, and Fungus... And the treatment will be different from region to region depending on what bacteria and what fungus. The most benign treatment is dusting with sulpher powder...

Your photos are very high caliber... when I opened one up I found it was 2500 rez which is almost native resolution.
so I could get a close look at those hind leggs.

I have a picture of a Clydesdale with extreme scratches.... horse was saved from a feed lot she could barely walk and was in so much pain she couldnt eat.

The pink stuff is open weeping sores that look like the horse has been litterally scratched. The skin around the coronary band is swollen and beginning to sluff down over the top of the hoof.

Clydesdales are very heavily feathered horses what you would have seen when you looked at the horse before the feathers were cut off would be huge hair touching the ground and it would be about a foot long....

Like this

notice even with all that feather the Cannon bones are well defined and you can see the dip between them and the lower tendon...

Scratches are also called Mud feaver...

thanks deb!

And yep, I can see the ripple kind of areas on the horses legs in the antique photo.

Cool that they are percherons.

Me, I just know that they are pretty.

I really like the pic of her with the turkeys, Al.

Here's a pic of my grandmother from my fathers side, ca 1939. That would make her about 16 in the picture.

This pic was from her Lotta Svärd member card. It was a womens organization that worked closely with the army during our time of war.

My grandmother worked in AA as a spotter somewhere outside the coast.

Alaskan there were 5 men in that photo with one woman. You said that is the side of the family that you are supposed to resemble . 4 our 5 chances you are a MAN. 1 out of 5 you are a woman. I'm still betting on man

Perchie notices everything, she is a cross between the dreaded "WHITE GLOVE" and "Eagle eye." I mean that in a very envious way. I'm more the 'after a post hits me in the head a couple times, I might notice it's there.'

I was at the doctor once and he dropped his clipboard - we both bent down to pick it up and bumped heads. I think I got the worst of it because I said "Now I'm gonna have brain damage." and he replied "Who would ever know?"

We both cracked up- he passed away 10 years ago. I still miss him badly.

Felix you are kidding

The same idea popped into my head and YOU are the one with the brains. Did you send that thought to me telepathically? I'm on a roll I guess, spell check just told me I spelled 'telepathically' right.
