I always wondered if double yolkers would hatch, they won't?

Some folks have done it, but it isn't recommended. The double-yolk egg doesn't have 2x as much room, so space becomes an issue. Often the chicks make it partway through incubation, and quit. Sometimes one makes it, one doesn't . There are a couple of YouTube videos of the assisted hatching of a double-yolk egg with two live chicks, but just because they made it that far didn't mean they really were viable - some don't make it, even after all that. So the usual advice is, don't even try.

I've had a few that started, one got going pretty good, then quit pretty far into incubation. Pretty sad to see the one big one and the one small one started.

Yep very interesting... Off to google quail eggs...
By the way hows quail taste?

I think they are very tasty... actually more 'delicate' tasting than chicken eggs.

Mom-in-law doesn't really like scrambled eggs made with chicken eggs.... but she liked the scrambled eggs made with quail eggs.

The quail eggs have more yolk to egg white. Their egg white DOES fluff up for a meringue... no joke, we tried it, but WOW does it take a long time to separate out 30 quail eggs.

And yes, deviled egg quail eggs are super cute.


And WHY does the spell check say that that is how to spell "meringue" you SAY it mer-A-nge.

X2 on the spelling... I meant how does the meat taste. Although the eggs sound amazing I want to know if I can eat the birdies... I know I can eat them but do they taste good... I'm sure they do... Ignore me...

Absolutely, It's a sweet tasting meat. 5-6 min on the grill, and you are good to go.

Alaskan, thats why I edit so much when I'm using my phone. Sometimes I have predictive text off and misspell words myself, and sometimes I turn it on because I just can't figure out how to spell a word and throwing up another tab to look it up is a pain. So by time I get done and post without proof reading there is words in my post that don't make any sense and I know I didn't put there Lol!

They will but they have to be assisted the one on the pointy end doesnt have an air cell to work in while pipping. There is a thread here on hatching double yolkers

oddly enough, lots of stuff that I have read say that you can't raise quail with chickens... that the quail will get sick and die..

Well, I tried it anyway

and it worked

I raised baby quail with bantams for a few weeks, maybe a month... since they were started together the chickens were fine with the quail, and I didn't have any problems. After they were older, and I hatched out more quail, I put all of the quail, by themselves into a chicken tractor that had been used by chickens.....

Also, after the first couple of weeks, the quail were raised on the lawn... supposedly having them on the ground is also bad, you are supposed to raise them on wire

Anyway, they were then moved, for the fall and winter into my coop. I put up one front wall under one of the poop trays in my one insulated coop. The front wall is just stuck in there, so I can take it out if I want. I have the front wall in thirds, two thirds are wire and the middle is a solid plywood door.

They are very happy, and are doing well. I have had NO death due to illness.

I had also read that you really need one male to only 5 or so female, or your fertility suffers.

I have one male with 15 females and almost all of the eggs are fertile....

Anyway... as to butchering and eating... I am hoping to sell extras, and never have to butcher them again... the dang things are just too small!

They do taste good.... but wowsers, my jumbo quail are tiny. (not that mine are defective, they are the size that they are supposed to be)

Of course, I only went dove hunting once, and then said 'sheesh! why bother" silly things are tiny.
