The Old Folks Home

Don't worry, Arielle... we might have a working snowblower but the truck that we use to plow had issues with 4wd in the last storm. BF took the day off work yesterday and had it fixed, so we thought, he gets it home last night and the brakes fail (luckily they failed in the locked on position). The repair shop opens at 0830, hoping they'll be able to come tow it today and fix it today. But I'm not holding my breath.

So I will likely be snowblowing the entire long driveway, plus out to all the coops...

I feel your pain--- my old truck wore out years ago. FIngers crossed those brakes are fixed asap this morning!!

I did all the plowing and that was a rush!! Couldmove the snow where I wanted it, praying the 4wheel would save me . . . . the snow blower is rather tame in comparison .. . . .getting around the coops and car and even clear the pad infront of the horse stalls. WOuld like to get another truck someday. . . . boys are talking about it!

We saved up for a plow a couple years ago. Because our driveway is so long and has the hairpin turn, plow contracts wanted to charge us between 80 and 100$ a storm - and they wouldn't guarantee that they'd be here and have us plowed out at a reasonable time. Since both of us have jobs that require us to get to work no matter what disaster comes (except me right now on temporary reassignment) that wasn't going to work for us, plus after 20 storms the plow would be paid for at that rate. So I kept snowblowing until we had enough for a plow. It would take hours to do the driveway. You'd have to get up in the middle of the night often to blow to ensure you could get out the next morning. It stunk. I am so glad we have a plow, now.

I hear you--- The cost to clear this drive ( a poor job at that) was $100 TWENTY years ago.

In my truck I could drive thru most anything, or over . . .on day, on my way to work,a 6"-8" tree was down completely across the drive. Not big but nothing a car could get over. Already feeling the stress of being late, and already in a dress, I tested the trucks "off road" capability!! lol Easy peasy. Miss that truck.

DH will leave for work Sunday night. . . return day/time will be unknown. Right now one conference call a day to prep for the storms . . .sure wish people understood how hard state workers work. . . DH puts in a lot of hours, even when he is not at work , he is at work. lol

I still need to get the breakdown for that seed mix we're using, but this is starting to look pretty ok.

If anyone want's the spreadsheet for own calculations, just ask.

I'm green with envy. I'm NOT looking forward to shoveling another 10 inches, but as I tell my kids if you can do this, you can do anything. IT is character building. lol

I was surprised that those with lawn still get to water, but the farmers were cut back severely--- or did I misunderstand the situation?? I cant eat grass, but I sure can munch on carrots, and broccalli !! ( I'm all for more effective watering of crops, of course.)

Deb you need to write an autobiography!!! Selfish is only selfish when someone else gets hurt; filling your own well is a blessing.

ANd people still get to water lawns?????? WHen is a crisis not really a crisis? When lawns are still green.

Where I lived growing up no one watered the lawns. Well water was not wasted: house hold use, fast showers, and watering the vegie gardens.

It depends on where you live in California. Water is a complicated thing here and is quite contentious. There have been "water wars" out here. Basically there is surface water in lakes and reservoir and then there is ground water. Ground water is not controlled in California. Other states to control it so those with wells can use as much as they want. Many wells started going dry this year and since many wells can be tapping the same aquifer, there is talk now of requiring meters on all wells in California.

Surface water is in two systems, the Federal system and the State system. Much of the State system water (Lake Oroville) is sent from the North to the South but some is used for farming. The Federal is more used for Farming but both systems also have a requirement to provide wetlands. So, to make this shorter, there are Cities, Farmers and Wildlife groups all fighting for the water. Oh yes, and then there are historic water rights. Those with historic water rights can take their allotment each year no matter what.

As you can see, it is very complicated.

Small stream flooding is my worry here but we made it through the first storm system fine here. Tomorrow will be another but I do not think it will be as wet.
