The Old Folks Home

The weather looked liked you were going to be trapped inside for a day or so. You can bake and watch the suet feeder disappear...

We only got about 2 inches of snow and then it started to ice. Supposed to snow/ice/sleet/freezing rain most of the day. Just came back from being out and the roads are atrocious.

Stop laughing, it's all YOUR fault.
tntchix, and I suppose you actually bought supplies -

Tntchx,

You are I'll, just like the rest of us.

I am hoping for a broody as my borrowed incubators have returned to their rightful owner. Hubby made a comment the other day about a girl going broody, I think I can convince him to let her hatch if she goes full on.

She went off the nest last night but was on there this morning so we'll see.

How Sad!

Perchie and I can start complaining about the heat now though. We broke a record here for the day yesterday--It was something over 80 for us. The neighbors had the Air conditioner on. I bet most people in Main do not even have an Air conditioner....We toughed it out with fans at my house--I do not want to have 500.00 electric bills.

yes I know we were talking about the video of the two week olds just calmly buzzing about in their little brooder house.

If you listen the the Keets at about that age they do make two separate noises a constant peep... but there is another and if you listen you will hear a peep-peep my guess is if you could isolate the dobule peep'ers you will find they will be females. Who will later on develop the Come back, Butt Crack, or Buck wheat noise...

Creaky hinge is the noise they use when they are foraging
The sound of Buzzing like bees will be heard while foraging but not as often I suspect its when they find something particiularly good. I havent observed in a very long time.
They all make the Chi Chi Chi that raises up in volume the more alarmed they get over something that "aint right" ...
The females make the Buckwheat over and over and over and over and over..... did I say over again?
The males and females once they get mature tend to be pretty quiet. When they arent alarmed over something.

I came out one morning kind of late... to feed. I had my pink bathrobe on. Only to be greeted by Caconopy from the roof. The boys were lined up on the ridge Screaming ..... ALARM and that big pink fluffy thing with the feed scoop. Soon as the food went in the feeders down they flew.

Yep four days here of 90-99 depending on were you were in town. Those were peak numbers Right at around 3 pm ish. Which was freaky because up till then our days were cool enough for a light sweater....50-60... NORMAL weather the weather I grew up with here was Rain from november through February off and on ... about twelve inches or so.

One year I think it was in 1970 ish.... we actually got 22 inches.... Forrester Creek that crosses Santee and merges with the San Diego river... flooded. I suspect before they dammed up the San Diego river that Santee would have been under about twelve feet of water back then. In Mission Gorge there are water marks a hundred feet up on the rocks.

I'll happily take the snow over the heat and drought.

It's snowing like a banshee again. The squirrel has eaten half the suet in the feeder today.

I'm with you on that one SCG... I'm not much for heat at all and much prefer cooler weather, even snow... It's really nice of you to make sure the wildlife around you gets a feed during the bad winter weather. I'm sure they appreciate it in their own way. It would be much more difficult on them without your handouts. I wonder how the deer herds are fairing with the deep snow. Makes it hard for them to get around and forage, and makes them easier targets for coyotes and the like.

Our permits for hunting are decreasing again this year, both for deer and moose. Our wild turkey population is also decreasing - there's really nothing for them to forage for right now the snow has been so deep.

Our wild turkeys are hanging out in the road in front of our house a few weeks ago, eating from what spilt out of the farmers 'honey wagon'.
