The Old Folks Home

Frozen yogurt is awesome. Haven't had it in yrs. My fav is just plain vanilla. If we go to a icecream place, we have one with 50 flavors, coffee with peanut butter. You always get a surprise there though, whatever the person had before you will be in the bottom of your cone. At home, vanilla with rhubarb goop on top, kinda like strawberries but with a tangy sour lemon kick.

poor Diva.... doesn't do yogurt.

diva... you forgot to comment on my current favorite flavor of ice cream... Ben & Jerry's Greek Frozen Jogurt Raspberry Fudge Chunk. See... it has jogurt and fruit... so it is a health food.

ok... I NEED to know... can no one else see the giant photo of the flaming trees on the last page?

It is invisible to all but me?

(hummmm sounds like my life)

I saw it and commented.... There is one small benefit to fire... it clears out the fuel source for some time... and helps some trees germinate...

But dang I been evacuated here from this house back in 2003 we went to moms house three miles away... fire jumped the road and started burning the mountain behind her.... They had gotten the fire out at grandmas... so we all evacuated back to grandmas house. It burned to the back fence from the end of the street to about three quarters of the way across the back fence at grandmas... Close... too close.

please think and have a general plan for where to go and what to take if you have to bug out. You may not have a choice as to where to go but its a good idea to plan for one incase you do. San Diego sets up evac centers for just people but there will be evac places for Livestock and you and your family are welcome to bunk in your horse trailer if needed.

Microchips in the dogs... Collars with contact info for everyone on four legs.... exept the horse....

I have a two horse slant load that would hold one big horse and as many chickens as I could catch and bag... and three or four goats...

smoke is bad for chickens they dont handle it as easily as dogs and cats can....

Alaskan, yes, I would eat the raspberry fudge if it was ice cream instead of yogurt. I also saw the burning trees but too scary to comment on.

You are not invisible Alaskan. I see you quite clearly. I shamefully admit I have just come back to the computer after eating nearly the entire 48 oz. Blue Bunny pistachio nut ice cream

I'm getting too old for this.

CC explained it perfectly. Many people take a smaller box, what's called a "nuc box" which is only 5 frames wide as opposed to a "deep" box which is 10 frames wide and place it about 10' high and strap it to a tree to lure a swarm into inhabiting it. Lots of bee keeps have their cell numbers listed with the state or local authorities to be called when someone reports a swarm so they can go collect it and have a new hive essentially for free. They simply place a container of some sort under the swarm, and shake/cut the branch so the swarm drops in. The queen will always be at the center of the ball of bees (swarm), so you really try to get the entire swarm if you can to be sure you also get the queen. I will be doing that next year, once I'm more knowledgeable and available. This is my 1st year.

Don't let age stop you! Most of the bee club members here are in their 70s! It's not that "hard" and you'd probably enjoy it... I do

When they swarm, there is usually a lot of flying activity around the hive as they get ready to split. I saw one of my hives doing that once. I went back a little while later and there was no activity. I then heard them, looked up and they had swarmed to a small branch about 30' above one of my chicken pens. Fortunately, at the time I owned a bucket truck. I took a box up into the tree, snipped off the branch so it fell into the box. I was so proud of myself after I got it installed into another hive body. Without the truck, they would have been lost.

I once saw a youtube video of a swarm high in a tree. A guy put a box under the swarm. He then used a shotgun to shoot the branch off and the swarm fell into the box. It was amazing. I thought I saved the link to it but I haven't been able to find it since.

Thanks CC and Late...I had a swarm come to our home once. Called the police to let them know, because we didn't know who to call..she did. :) That guy came out with a smoker??? and..got them into a hive, one of many in the back of his truck. He explained how they were all around the queen. Pretty interesting.
The thing about swarms is that there is little stinging danger from them. Leave them alone and there are no worries.
A bee saves its sting for protecting the hive. The brood and honey stores are what they're protecting. A swarm has neither so there is nothing to protect.
Foraging bees don't sting unless they have no choice, like if someone were to step on one in the field.

We have several different frozen yogurt places here and I can report, it is awesome.
We also have a famous frozen custard place called Ted Drewe's. I can also report it's reputed yumminess is accurate.
Many years ago when I was in my 20s I had an apartment across the street from the custard place. I worked 5pm to 4am and slept till about noon. For breakfast most days I had a strawberry sundae made with frozen custard.

It was an amazing picture. I just didn't know what it had to do with ice cream.

I'm actually not afraid of bees. I walk around them and don't worry about being stung. I finally got stung by a wasp a couple of yrs. ago..worse than a bee sting! On the inside of a finger..was picking up an apple. Pretty painful for a while. Bee sting I got yrs. and yrs. ago didn't hurt that bad.

Ice Cream? If we are talking ice cream,..it has to be Burnt Almond Fudge. Love it. But, can't eat ice cream anymore. I can take a bit of someone's, but can't have a bowl full any more. Just as well I suppose. :/
