The Old Folks Home

Our Christmas season ended early when last night the tree decided it was done. For some reason it toppled over... Sad as it was a pretty and fresh Noble Fir from Costco. (Note to self: Next year attach guide wires to the top to stabilize.) Only 5 ornaments were the casualty, but what a sharded glittery mess! Of course, the stand tipped, too, so water and pine needles to clean up. We decided to take the tree to the outside and clean up the floor. Today was spent taking down the rest of the Christmas decorations and packing them away.

But the holidays aren't over! We're hosting a tamales and pernil party on New Year's Day for 20 folks. Should be fun!

At present we're enjoying the aftermath of the snowstorm. Forecasters predicted 1-3" of snow, but the unexpected blizzard ended up being named "Goliath" which closed down nearly all the roads and freeways in New Mexico. Lots of sideways blowing snow and ice crystals. Everything looks so serene blanketed in white....

Your storm even made our news. Hopefully you don't have to go out for a few days.

Peep - our tree did that too. It wasn't in the stand quite tightly enough and was fuller on one side that the other. I came home to find it had feinted and husband sweeping up broken ornaments. How much snow did you need up with in NM?

We had A LOT of blowing, so only ended up with about 4" in our yard. But the snow was everywhere, even under covered porches and up onto the furniture back against the house. It'll be gone tomorrow, though, as it'll be 35 degrees at noon. We had a little bit of melt today and it was 33, enough to make a few icicles. It's not a fluffy snow with big flakes here but little ice crystals. Kind of like silica sand.

The top ornament on our tree was a goner.... Found pieces of it clear across the room. Luckily none of the ornaments from the folks got damaged, but a couple of pretty large ornate balls disintegrated into glass confetti. Kind of bummed as I wasn't ready to put stuff away, but -- hey -- at least it's done now. And we took the afternoon to sort all the Christmas storage boxes into a more cohesive order and actually ended up with a couple less large boxes to stow in the "once a year" closet where all decorations and tax records reside.

Is the starter hard to make on that?
How long does it usually take to get a good sour dough starter?

You have to start them using raw milk. An alternative is to use plain yogurt--Pasteurization kills the bacteria that makes the sour flavor.

A new starter takes six months to a year to have enough punch to raise dough. The best way is to get a start from someone.

I have sent starter to several on here.

send me a pm with your mailing address and I will have one sent to you.

We have leftover Christmas roast beef for sandwiches and ample salad fixings, plus eggnog. (YUM!) We're all set. But if the roads will permit I'll try to catch the Dollar Matinee with the movie ladies, "The Martian." Very surprised at the total incapacitation of the interstates.

Chickens didn't go out of the coop today. Wusses.
