The Old Folks Home

Bama, CC and Al, and anyone else battling the elements, hope it clears up soon.

We finally got some more winterlike weather, temps are in the low 20's now. Still no snow, really, just a dash of frost covering the ground. And sunshine!

Al, why not a couple of planks to put under the tyres? And did you get the Nokians like I told you? US winter tyres are worthless, at least the ones I've seen on muscle cars around here. You need proper studded tyres when the bad weather starts.

I got a lot of Christmas presents this year, a sweater, 11 pairs of socks, some underwear, and a wonderful ceramic coffee maker (the kind you pour hot water into). Also, we got a new toaster.

And looks like we'll be getting a late xmas present from the power company too. They're about half a mile from us now, putting in underground cables. Soon windy weather won't put out the power anymore.

I had chickens drown and coops wash away. Raining again now
Is that for real? That's awful.
It has to stop sometime.

how many did you loose???

@ChickenCanoe have you lost any?

You'll both made my snow and power woes sound like peanuts.

Haven't lost any but they all look like drown rats as soon as they go outside, all day and half the night. They're pretty dry by morning and then it starts all over.
I'm at the top of a big hill so no danger of things washing away but I have a berm across the back of the property that I may need to cut a drain through or dig a sump and put a pump in to send some water out.

Hang in there chickens.

I'm on my way to get a new rain gauge. According to the news we've had 9" with this storm and 3-4 more coming today. It's supposed to be over by early evening.

Of the people that drown in Illinois, 5 were a family, parents and 3 children travelling from Kentucky to Minnesota when they were swept off the road. They called 911 and a fireman was making his way to their car when it was swept farther downstream and it sank.
9 confirmed drown on the MO side. 4 were international soldiers stationed at Fort Leonard Wood.

That's great.
Newly built areas around here have underground power but all these old areas have the poles and obligatory power outages.
We had 3 lengthy ones in one year so I bought a nice generator and we haven't had one more than a few hours since.
