The Old Folks Home

Ha! Cause this is CA! Codes and permits for everything! I'm county, not city, zoned rural residential agricultural. I had to submit a Plot Plan and get a permit ($1300.) before I could obtain a kennel licence (another $300. bi-annually) so that I could own more than 4 dogs! I'm allowed 10 now and submit to routine random inspections and really strict rules.
I feel ya @Beer can ! When I went to build my barn, 24X112, the permits alone would have been over $7000. So, we graded and waited, poured cement footers and waited, then put up a kit barn. We call it "portable"! The downside is that when we sell, it won't be included in the appraisal. Ca regulates everything. I think your prices are still higher for things like fuel and groceries though. I'm looking to move soon. Tx or TN are looking pretty good.

It's all nothing more than taxation. Just another way for those in power to make money. It started as a way to protect folks from their own mistakes and save property and life, but is now basically nothing more than another govt income stream. I'm moving out of CO this summer. too many CA people moved here and have turned it into what they left. Why do these idiots do that? I'm looking at either East TX or Northern/central KY. My income won't be taxed in either place but KY has 6% sales tax while TX has 9%+ I can also afford more land in KY than in TX. We'll see what's available when the time comes. Have to get this place spruced up and sold first.

Deb, how can there be codes in the middle of nowhere?

Crazy.

Up here the only worry is the taxman.

Remember its California. There are a few differences from the city but the house is a big deal. Up till about twenty years ago San Diego County did NOT allow Mobile homes on your property unless you had a build permitt.

Now mobile homes are allowed. but They cannot be registerable with the DMV. No tin siding They Must have Regular roofing wether it be shake, shingle, or metal. There must be Eves of the appropriate size. New construction requires eves to be enclosed unless they are heavy timber.

I know people with doublewide double decker mobile homes around here. A 30'x80' with a 26' x 65' on top of it. Holes cut for the stairs.

True that! Here, they get a permit for a double wide, stucco around it, then gut and build the inside to avoid building inspectors and fees.

You are spot on! Californians seemed to have flooded OR and CO. Taxes are awful on retirement income. Us idiots leave Ca to escape overtaxation, gangs and violence I think.I'm right behind you on the exact same plan. Get this place spruced up and get outta here! TX can be a bit strange on property taxes. Each county is different. Tn and Ky are beautiful and some parts of AK IMO.
Big problem for me...I ain't seen a flying bug in 25 years! Well, cept for flies. Forgot what humidity is.
