The Old Folks Home

Most of my broodies can't find their nests in our nest box area. I have one on eggs right now. I am using a "cage" front that I built out of scrap wood and chicken wire. It fits over the front of the nest box. I go out once a day, remove the cage, throw her out of the nest to eat/drink/poop and then when she returns to the coop I make sure she goes in the right nest (or I move her to the right nest), then close the cage back over her.

She's due in one week. Looks like 5 of the 6 shipped Olandsk Dwarf eggs are developing.

Thanks Scg. I suggested a cage to DH and he said he will just keep putting her back on her nest. lol He really does not want her sitting on any eggs. I finally told him to give her 2 about a week ago. He did mark them finally last night. She wants to have chicks so bad I feel sorry for her.
The last time we moved her nest she gave up on the eggs. So when they are suppose to go into lock down I am only going to put her on the floor of the coop to hatch them and see what happens if anything.

I still think this is a better idea than moving her. It's simple and I didn't build it exactly to fit so I use "shims" to get it to stick in the front of the nesting box. It protects her and her chicks until they hatch and I can move them all.

I do love your set up Scg but my nest boxes are just sitting on a couple of boards and only a thin piece of plywood maybe 1/8" thick on either side. So I have nothing to attach anything to or sit it on. I will see if I can get some wire around the front and top and see if that will work some how. My DH is going to kill me!

They are so cute!

Our Buckeye hen has gone broody again and every day when she gets off her nest for her break the other hens are in her nest. So she get's in another nest. DH gathers the eggs daily and gets upset that she is on a different nest. I told him it is because the other hens get in her nest! He's so frustrated with her. lol Last time she did not hatch anything and we don't think she will this time but we can't keep her off the nest! Crazy girl!

make her a broody enclosure to exclude the other hens have her nest box food and water and a spot to dust bath.... she will thank you.

Quote: I have a lot of empty pens and I tried to move her to one the last time she went broody into my old turkey pen. It's a nice large pen that I baby proofed. She gave it up.
My DH is not going to build anything when he does not want her having chicks anyways. But I tried.

She is not happy with me either. But I can let her in and out. it does only have one nail on each side at the bottom.

Then while I was getting the girls back into their run I had to rescue my girls and catch this thing that I am terrified of! I only had a stick in my hand and it was headed into the coop!

Then all I could do was go on the other side of the property and through it in the other pasture! I was so scared it was going to bite me!
