The Old Folks Home

SCG you're still up? Me too, haven't been to bed yet and have to get up soon. As usual

I'm thinking about taking a large dose of benadryl in about an hour and see if I can't sleep in tomorrow morning and try to reset things. Problem is, I have some wicked insomnia, anyway, with a hint of narcolepsy. I'm basically narcoleptic at some point between 10pm and 2am, then wide awake after I've slept for 2-4 hours. This is going to be really fun to add to that shift.

This shift doesn't actually exist at our work. We have construction going on (basically they're going to be jackhammering into concrete) and that can't happen during the day when we're there and trying to work. So they'll be doing it at night when we're normally closed, although one of us has to be there with the construction workers, by law. Unfortunately there's no extra staff to do this, so I get it.

Last week when I agreed to do it it didn't seem so bad. Tonight, staring down the barrel of staying up until 7am... it's Mission Impossible.

I would think that the jackhammering would make sleep beyond impossible! How far from a residential area is this? I can't imagine people being real happy with that noise well past city "noise ordinance" time. I bet you can hear a jackhammer a mile away at 1 AM when all the "normal" noise is gone.

Really sorry for your work sched SCG. That's a real hard situation. I have severe obstructive sleep apnea... I can truly identify with not being able to sleep. I generally sleep for an hour or 2 at most then drift on and off the remainder of my time in bed. From my military days and long distance driving, all I could recommend is lots of coffee and a handy bathroom for after you start drinking. I used to buy/use NoDoze (500mg caffeine tablets) but they would wire me so bad I'd get the shakes and coming back down was a severe crash.

What steps have you taken for your SA? I have it too (and narcolepsy). They tested with a CPAP. Awful thing, every time I moved it pulled off my face some and I would wake up to reset it. I think I woke up more with it than without! Still tired in the morning but I wasn't waking up with that CO2 headache. Then, since that did work, they offered throat surgery or an oral appliance. If I had first gone with surgery and it didn't work they couldn't exactly put my parts back in could they? I went to a dentist that made oral sleep apnea appliances (basically 2 retainers with a connection that keeps your lower jaw pushed forward to keep your throat more open). Worked great for about 10 years before I oops dropped it in the sink and one connector broke off. Now I have a TAP II. Instead of sliding "rod in tube" like the old one, it has a hook in the front of the top retainer that connects into a slot in the bottom one. WAY WAY WAY more portable than a CPAP (and the necessary humidifier add on) and takes no electricity. If you haven't been given info about this device, I suggest talking to your ENT.

I'm 2 floors down from an actual unit, and between us is a very noisy air handler unit. They won't hear much. The rest of the acute units are in another wing and the nursing homes and psych unit are about 0.8 miles away. They won't be disturbed.

I've been outside the past few hours hauling dirt into my "smart pots" and trying to plant them. I just broke the hose nozzle and I'm getting eaten alive by black flies.

Hopefully I'll be done by the end of today, though. I don't think this is going to keep me awake, either. I'll probably pass out around 6 pm being so exhausted.

The VA covered a CPAP w/humidifier for me (based on a previous test which gave the same results) but I couldn't sleep with it. Like you, it kept needing adjustment, was too loud and I toss and turn a lot so it was like having my face tethered to something off the side of the bed. In addition, even with the humidifier, my mouth and sinuses kept drying out. After a couple of weeks I sent it back. This test was the start of the process (the test was the first part) of getting me set up for an oral appliance. I haven't heard anything further since the results, but have a reg appt set up this week so will check into what's going on.
