@Pensmaster, Some people think you need to add apple cider vinegar to fermented feed. That makes it acidic acid ferment, you want natural lactic acid ferment like sauerkraut, I don't add anything.
Some people use three containers and go three days, refilling them in rotation. I use a five gallon bucket and go just one day, save a little and add to it, gets it going faster. I keep it the consistency of oatmeal, no need to drain and it ferments pretty good in one day in warm weather, like Latestarter said smells like sourdough bread. I've never had it go bad.
Edit that, when I first start it I do wait three days.
I'll never feed dry feed again, I think my feed bill got cut in half.

Wow that would be great. I tried it before didn't save any time. Since then I get the spent grain in five gallon buckets and it sets for about 1 week while I go though it so I thought it was fermenteing. They have started to prefer it over the pellets. Just can't feed too much of it as it's very fibrous. It's already moist when I get it so maybe mixing pellets into it will make it about right. I have quite a few birds. So I'll need to figure out a new method of feeding. Pellets are convenient. Since I feed morning and night and work I'll have to figure a new system to make it work.
I've used the vinegar before. Can't say as they liked it so much.

They get severe diarrhea if that's the term for chickens. It's a great supplement as it's had most of sugars removed and protein left but very fibrous. I usually get by with 25% but watch their waste all the time.

There was a lady that was picking grain up from my friend as well and fed it 100% to her goats they had stomach problems and died. All things in moderation I guess.

I've also made bread out of it. Yummy
