The Old Folks Home

Havent won the Nobel prize yet but ive noticed that diet type or content has way less to do with weight than exercise. I was lifting heavy and maintained 200 pounds no matter what i ate. When i ran 35 miles a week i got rid of the 15 pounds i picked up when i started workimg in the Ford factory when i was 19. When i ran i ran, not jogged. I was working on 6 minute miles when my knee gave out on me and i had to quit.

There is a limit though. Most really obese people i know also eat way more than normal and dont really get much exercise. My stepson didnt know he was eating too much, it just seemed like what he needed to feel good. He always filled his plate at least twice and died in his sleep at 42. He weighed over 400 pounds then. It wasnt so much the kind of food as the amount.

Yes and I'm sad to say the turkey is still alive and we're bringing her back in tomorrow for her 436098th bumblefoot treatment. I know I should just cull her. She's coming inside with a (young) leghorn. I'm telling you, it's certain breeds at this house. I had leghorns when I first got birds and all of them had revolving bumble. They all died early, too, of internal laying. Last year I got 2 leghorn chicks from the feed store, and one already has a bumble. She's coming inside tomorrow with the turkey. Unfortunately the turkey goes on hunger strike when we bring her in, so I'm thinking it's good that we have a second bird to treat now, so they can be (lame) friends and maybe the turkey will eat.

Or they'll just fight to the death down there. That's more my luck.

The oral metronidazole worked very well on her, but didn't completely cure it. It was the best her feet have looked, though. I've got a new plan to pack her feet this time with something different.

My Call has a friend that's been coming in with her, so lucky no issues with food strikes or anything... I'm just feeling awful digging in her foot all the time... I knkw it hurts, but she's being such a trooper... I just don't think I'm getting it all out... started her on an oral antibiotic so hoping that doing both will eventually knock it out... let me know what and how the new packing goes, please? Hard to keep anything on a duck web, lol...

Our understanding of the human body and nutrition change on a daily basis.

That is for SURE. Butter is good. Butter is bad, use margarine (partially hydrogenated oil). Partially hydrogenated oil is bad, use butter. I grew up on Imperial margarine. When I graduated college nearly 40 years ago and moved to Vermont, I decided I would go with butter. Haven't bought margarine since. Sure glad I'm eating the healthier version now

And olive oil has been a staple as long as I can remember. I use a lot more of that than butter.

When the pharmacuitcal companies lobbied to lower the limit so they could sell more drugs, my cholesterol finally went a couple of points over and i started taking statens. My doctor said cholesterol is fat and most people who have high levels are either sedentary or genetically cursed. For most people it has little to do with diet although exercise can help since it increases metabolism.

Most cholesterol in your body is manufactured in house, not eaten.

Same here. I was on statins for a couple of years. My cholesterol was borderline OK before them and since my sister has high blood pressure, my Dad's mother had heart attacks and my Dad had had a triple bypass, my doctor thought a low dose was best. My levels on the statens were quite good. I ran out of pills a few weeks before my last physical, I could have ordered more but I figured it would be nice to see what the numbers were when I was off them. I got the blood test results before my appointment and the levels were up to borderline OK again. I told all this to the doctor and said I guess I needed to restart. Nope she said, the "concern" levels have changes, you are fine. So I'm not on statins now. My Dad got hit on the other side some long while back, the one you referenced with the pharma companies I guess. At one point his doctor told him his levels were too high. Thing is, they hadn't changed. The "OK" number had dropped.

I have squash bugs and other creatures on all my food in my garden. I guess I need to find a recipe for a trap.

I read the part in blue and

, then I saw the rest. Still, since you will have all that free protein, maybe you do need a recipe for the bugs

Hoping I don't get squash bugs. I was late planting last year (first time I've grown squash) and never saw one. The Red Kuri still had time to ripen. I planted more "on time" this year. We will see.

Which oral antibiotic?

Have ducks almost as long as chickens but never had a bumble on a duck. You may want to try the waterproof bandaid either the actual bandaid or the paint on kind.

This is the only duck I've ever had a problem with bumble on... think it's cuz they like to chase off any and all wildlife that comes near, even across neighbors yards... think she went through his demo pile... :/

Since she is my OH's pet I'm giving her Baytril... seems to be helping, inflammation and heat is down...

And thanks for the tip... will go look for that today... :)

It's a combination of the two.

You need carbs for energy, so if you don't get enough carbs then you won't have the energy you need to exercise. If you don't get enough protein you won't be able to build muscle.
And if you eat too much fat, well, you'll get fat. The key to being fit and healthy is to eat right, exercise, drink plenty of water and get at least eight hours of sleep per night. It's as simple as that.
That's why calorie restriction is a bad idea, and why I don't buy into fad diets.

Oh, and I'm sorry about your step-son.

@RavynFallen and @superchemicalgirl , I haven't ever had to treat a bumble, but I found this and thought it might be helpful: -Kathy
Thanks, Kathy... the chart kinda freaked me out at first, but after reading the article I feel a little better... I think I'm finally on the right track now too... it was just getting worse after each time I pulled a plug out, but today it is much better... and she is perkier and a bit more active... last 2 days, she just sat in the sun... today she moves a few steps and is foraging a bit after sitting down...

Yeah, reading the rest of the article does help... Kind of glad you brought up this subject, 'cause reading the article again gave me some ideas to try on my peacock that has odd sores on the webbing of his feet. They aren't quite bumbles, but they are painful, and on top of the pain, he's acting very sick, so I'm gonna address the feet by cleaning and applying bandages.

Straight from Joe Weider's mouth. I wasnt a real body builder but i did put on 25 pounds over 40 years of off and on training. My lean weight has actually been the same since my 20's. My lifting made me strong but didn't add much weight but i could pick beans or strawberries all day bent over with no pain and It did move the weight around some. I used to love how my arms looked after a 3 set session of preacher curles. A friend of mine who was more enthused managed to build a 52" chest and could free curl 175 pounds. He ate 6 cans of tuna per day during his bulking cycle. I did 3 sets with 120 pounds preacher style and was not as big as my workout pals who couldnt lift that much and ate what i wanted :)
