Off topic for a minute Alaskan, go see the movie "Captain Fantastic," with Viggo Mortensen. Not a super hero, he is a father raising 5-6 who knows how many kids off the grid. Teaches them to hunt, clean the kill etc. How to process their animals etc. etc. I kept thinking you are like that. His kids could probably survive anywhere except in a city (they had never been to one) etc.

He home schools and his kids are smarter than the ones school educated. Plus he taught them to play musical instruments and so on. I loved the movie, my brother hated it.

Okay I'm done here - please continue with regularly scheduled topic.

I like to say that I am 39 with 24 years of experience.

I've been blessed with 'youthful' genes. When people ask me how old I am I usually tell them to guess. When they say 40 something, I just look thoughtful and say, "Okay, that's how old I am, I can live with that number".

Unfortunately, my aching back, painful knee and sore shoulder snap me back to reality.
That's a good one, too:) And, oh yes, I, too, know about aches and pains. They do jolt us back to reality pretty darned quickly :)

Thanks for the tutorial, Cyn. I hadn't thought of a biopsy punch - we use a scalpel or a razor blade.

I was shocked when I first tasted honey from my hive. It was a completely different taste than anything I had ever had in my life. It was unbelievable. Even 2 days ago, when processing honey, I'd stick my finger in some that dripped on the counter and slurp it up. I am not a person that would do that normally. But it is sooo good. I also switched to real maple syrup when I moved to Maine. There's a really nice farm near me that even ships it. I sent it as gifts last year for Christmas and my sister has already asked me to repeat that gift this year. My sister, who took over my dad's newspaper column, writes about it here: http://www.somdnews.com/independent...cle_5c28c4eb-7e66-54bc-b56c-2bd0ec3b6d4f.html

Thanks Cynthia for sharing. I have never seen it done and would probably not have tackled that myself with out instructions from someone else that had done it.

Our local stores stock Ambrosia honey from a local that has bee hives all over. I tried it and did not like it at all! Thank goodness they started carrying a new brand that is organic.
