The Old Folks Home

I have a cemetary on my land... the newest grave has a chunk out of the headstone... and it's one of the flat to the ground ones... my dad hit it with a brush hog.... sigh....

Thanks superchemicalgirl and alaskan. I was figuring that would be the response. Had to try though. My bachelors get along well in their pen and coop. I switch them out every few months and they settle down after a few days in the bachelor pen.I must be lucky because my bachelor pen and the main pen are next to one another (the way the fencing worked out) , in full view of the hens and the boys are doing good. At least they aren't attacking me which is worth the hassle of splitting them up from the rest of the coop.

We used to live next to an old cemetary. The last burial was in 1948 and it had a lot of Civil War vets buried in it so it was probably founded in the mid 1800. Lots of old and damaged tombstones. Sad. We usually found them laying in a corner. Nobody seemed to know what to do with them.

We had a plane crash near our local airport. Three couples aboard, all killed. They were on their way back to Mississippi from a dentist's conference in Orlando. They leave behind a total of eleven children. My heart hurts.....

Al, if you can get a picture of that stone send it to my screen name at gmail. I'll ask him what to do if that doesn't specifically come up (or you aren't sure what the stone is made of).

I'll be there until Monday. Likely won't have signal there, but I can download it to my phone if you get it to me by Sunday night.

see I woulds enjoy the opportunity to see all of those
I understand the one fraction that brought my last
name into books goes back that far but would have
fought for the south as was reportedly hanged for
assisting the brethren (blacks)

I don't have a good photo either :idunno

I have been having trouble figuring out how to get the cemetery cleaned up... It is a very old one, with just a few head stones (but lots of burials) that is currently in the middle of a horse pasture. (Not owned by anyone I know)

When I went out there to look it over I could only barely see the oldest one (the broken one) and it was face down. The stones have been covered over with thorn covered vines so thickly that I couldn't even reach the stone. My job this year is to figure out how to get it cleaned up long distance..... And figure out how to fix the broken and fallen over stone.

I did contact a cemetery society in the county in question (Washington County down in Texas), but they were no help on cleaning up the brush.

The busted headstone is a light colored grey stone, and is carved. It is not concrete. I really know nothing else.... So sorry.

Of all of the other headstones that I visit when I am in Texas.... None of the rest are broken (well, one had the little urn on top broken off), a few have some moss growing on them, and I have been reticent to scrape it off with a popsicle stick (which is what I think is correct?). One of the headstones had the deeply cut letters painted. It looks pretty good. My uncle had the local headstone business do it, I am not sure how well that weathers either, but it has been looking OK to me. One other headstone that I was starting to worry about was also painted by I have no idea who...and that turned out just great. They painted the carved vines green etc. and it looks good.

I am babbling.... Because I feel bad that I haven't yet rescued that poor headstone and cemetery....
