The Old Folks Home

Bunny it is an old bridge along the path.  I'm not really sure what it was used for.  It is near live train tracks and there was another set of cement/rock structures nearby that seemed to be more bridge abutments but only on one side of the stream.  I think SCG tried to figure out what they were used for in the past but couldn't find it.  It is slowly rotting away.  I don't think anyone is working on it.

:bun lady do you not have any of those bridges near you? Look just like that, but add wood planks to make it driveable. The wood has rotted away... And there you go.

I am pretty sure Al has the right of it. I found another picture of it before it was overgrown and it looked like it used to be for traffic not trains. The "roadbed" was missing in the other picture too but it probably was wood.

Wooden bridges, no. They just don't last in this climate - if the upper parts are metal, the deck is at least concrete. I know they used to make bridge decks of wood, but I've also heard that unless they were covered, they wouldn't last - I have seen one old covered bridge in the mountains, but that's the only one. All wood, stone, or steel and stone, those I'm familiar with; the possibility of a wood deck seemed obvious, but I've never seen the various technologies combined like that.

This is a one-lane bridge here in Wilmington. Over a century old, it was built to span a railroad cut. In its current state, it is considered structurally deficient and functionally obsolete . . . but it still has a concrete and asphalt road deck. I understand it has gained some fame due to a certain TV series that was filmed here.
