The Old Folks Home

Just to shock you all about the awesomeness of Alaska:

Oh... And this is little kids.

At Allis school she's taking a class called Alaska Wildlife where they get things like a bear that was hit and killed on the Glenn highway. Hunters have donated coyotes. Last week someone brought in a chicken that died. Caribou heads. Anyways they get to "dissect" them and remove everything off the bones. The bones are then boiled to be cleaned and after the kids get to reconstruct the bones into the animal. She loves it. And yes they use knives lol

That is awesome. I've been butchering deer for as long as I can remember, and the guy next door when I was growing up would bring longhorn cattle heads home and let them rot in his backyard so he could get the skulls, I would go over there nearly daily and look at the cows...

When I was about 17 years old, I was field dressing some quail. A young cousin of mine, but 5 wanted to watch. She was fascinated by the process. I did worry a bit about mentally scarring her but she is a fine upstanding adult now....

Diva I kind of agree! hahhaa I would run if I had to go to that class when I was young.
But now that I have had to do some of the things I have, I should not have taken the "F" in sience class for not wanting to disect that dang frog.

That is AWESOME!!!!! I was fortunate enough to come up through a school system that did a lot of similar, hands on stuff - as well as having a family full of hunters and growing our own meat animals, it all fascinated my young mind and I think if it is made part of the "normal" from the start it is less of an "ick" factor because their minds are at that point of absolute curiosity about EVERYTHING!

morning old folks partly through my first cup of coffee
last night I was told I could take the chicks counting 3
to my broody hen with no eggs it is the first three
from the incubator as eggs where added 4 days apart
my major help was by Hinotori from our Washington state thread

Have you made the introductions yet? A good broody can be a great adoptive mother, hope it goes well for you and your flock.
20 minutes is all it takes to get a tough old bird to fall apart tender in a pressure cooker, love ours and the slow cooker crock pot does a great job also.
When I pressure cook I remove bird, take all the meat off and set aside, re-pressure cook carcass with the broth, strain and cool, fat goes to top and hardens, take off fat, best broth ever, re-add the meat, diced potatoes carrots onions little celery, or egg noodles, or and dumplings, dang best chicken soup ever! Makes good base for chicken-n-biscuits also.
YUM!!!!

Dh and I went camping for the weekend and found a nice swampy area that had some crocks in it. See if you can find the one in each photo. hahha

The tope one is a small gator the second one is a whopper!
The small one stayed very close to dh while we were fishing as close as 6-10'.
We think people have been feeding it, it was not scared but keep swiming close watching us. Then we spotted the second one and when he noticed we spotted him he slid into the water and swam off a bit.

SO cool - too bad about people possibly feeding them (sounds quite likely it's the case) - it really handicaps the animals and leads to disasterous situations where the animal pays the ultimate price for the "kindness"/ignorance of humans.

don't think anyone would call a bat pretty -

Pretty, no - but there are some definitely some cute ones out there!
I would rather have bats than flying bugs, that's for sure. (But not in the house.)

Maybe a bat house or two would be a good idea around here.

Absolutely - we had a great little colony near our place in Indiana, used to LOVE sitting outside in the evening and watching them start out after the bugs.

Got the kitchen garden pulled up and cleaned out today (left the celery, though). My 40 lb pumpkin was a howden breed, as I suspected. I grow one ornamental gourd plant each year in that garden. Last year I got 56 gourds off the one plant, this year I only got 50 but the gourd is a different breed than last year and these are larger gourds. I'll start throwing the chicken poop from the board into the garden and I'll do that until we get significant snow or until there's a good covering of poop on the garden, whichever is first. That way it will age for about 6 months before I have to plant in there. That really makes a difference in my garden (that and the bees).

We also went apple picking early this morning. Got 2 large bags like we always do. I'll probably start the apple butter today and finish by canning it tomorrow. Will also be making some pie filling (and in a few weeks make and freeze some crusts) and probably canning a few more apple based products - but the pantry is already full. Probably also have to make my apple pancakes tomorrow.

I still have to pull up all my flower beds (a ton of them and will probably be 2 days of work), treat the bees for winter for diarrhea and probably bring in another half cord of wood, but then I'm ready for winter. It's coming.
Busy busy!!!!

Is diarrhea a common issue with bees? What is the treatment?

One of my cats went missing today... hope she shows back up. But, she was a stray when we caught her, and she is still where she was caught, so a good chance she can handle herself if she choses not to come back. Leaving food out for her and keeping an eye out.
Oh, hope she comes back soon-- sometimes those stray converts like to slip off for a few days of adventure now and again.

I HATE WINDOWS 10!!! That's where I've been. The stupid big anniversary update just "kicked in" right in the middle of my session on Wednesday night. I got tired of watching the little "leave me alone I'm busy" wheel going round so I finally did exactly what you're not supposed to do last night (cold boot) last night, after trying everything else . It gave me several scolding messages and took off again. FINALLY, when I got up this morning, my laptop belonged to me again and miraculously, it is functioning well. Now, I am afraid to turn on my desktop for fear the fight will start all over again.

ETA: about the milk, lots of city folks don't know that pasteurizing and homogenizing are not the same and not necessary to be done together. I wish I could find a source of unhomogenized milk so I could once again make butter and cheese) I used to love drinking raw milk and making my own butter and still have a love of REAL buttermilk.. There had been a long battle going on in our state about the right to sell raw milk that was finally settled, and lost, in the court so it is now illegal for the distribution or sale of raw milk in any way so until I can talk the DH into a dairy goat or two. (I used to have a source of "unprocessed" milk from a fellow organic enthuseist but they passed away some time ago, from very old age, not from drinking raw milk).

Oh, I so hear you on the Windows 10 issue -- happened to me a few months ago and it was an absolute nightmare -- like you, was just toodling along using the laptop and out of nowhere it started cycling through some "updates" and next thing I know it's two days of fighting to get it just to boot up to the point I could do anything with it and, SURPRISE there was Windows 10.

On the milk thing - did they outlaw the sale of "shares" of an animal -- many places you can get around the banning of sales of actual product, ie milk, by selling a share of the animal itself which then entitles the "owner" to a portion of the products of that animal -- in essence you do have a milk cow/goat, but it lives elsewhere and is owned in partnership with x number of other share-holders.....so you are using your own milk, not buying or distributing it.

It is common in the current world of computing, and hand held devices, to assume everyone has a lot of bandwidth. The upgrades for Window 10, especially the original upgrade from Win 7 to Win 10 and the Anniversary edition that came out in August are huge! If you do not have a lot of bandwidth, It can take days for the update to download into your computer.
