this reminds me of an old discussion we had I think this time last year. This is where I must admit once more that my coop's poop board gets cleaned every morning. I have a deep layer of woodchips on it (there are rims on it, think baking pan). When I go in to collect eggs I bring a poop bucket and 2 kitty litter scoopers and scoop away. When the woodchips layer gets thin (about once a month or so, more in winter) I clean out, de-bug underneath and load up with fresh woodchips. Then again, my coop was designed for this method (also for added roost warmth) and I have far fewer birds than most of you. Oh, and my floors are vinyl covered with a thick overlay of marsh hay.Feed sacks.... I now line the poop shelves with feed sacks in the winter.... Take sack outside.. Break off poop, replace.. And if it doesn't work, just use a new sack.
Quote: When I went to Chris Mccary's farm to pick up my Buckeye we walked through his barns where his chickens roost. He has several barns and they all have very deep litter in them about 2 feet of litter leaves and wood chips and what ever else but I tried it and it really keeps the poo under control. The chickens keep turning the litter over and mixing it up so it does not just pile up.
I don't know if this would work for you. But I love it and you just add to it.
I do deep litter and it is great. I just cleaned out over the weekend and there was about a foot of chips under the roosts. No smell when I shoveled it out but boy, once DH moved it to our compost bed for it to finish decomposing for next spring you sure didn't want to be down wind of it. I'm thinking about adding the leaves to the mix this winter. With 20 acres of timber there won't be a lack of them that is for sure.
Okay that may have been me with the vacation mix up. I'll blame the yellow jacket sting and a surplus of Benedryl and SIngulair in my system for that one, duh.
