Ever since I saw Chis' barns we have used the deep litter method and not had a problem with smell or fly's.I do deep litter and it is great. I just cleaned out over the weekend and there was about a foot of chips under the roosts. No smell when I shoveled it out but boy, once DH moved it to our compost bed for it to finish decomposing for next spring you sure didn't want to be down wind of it. I'm thinking about adding the leaves to the mix this winter. With 20 acres of timber there won't be a lack of them that is for sure.
Okay that may have been me with the vacation mix up. I'll blame the yellow jacket sting and a surplus of Benedryl and SIngulair in my system for that one, duh.
