I do deep litter and it is great. I just cleaned out over the weekend and there was about a foot of chips under the roosts. No smell when I shoveled it out but boy, once DH moved it to our compost bed for it to finish decomposing for next spring you sure didn't want to be down wind of it. I'm thinking about adding the leaves to the mix this winter. With 20 acres of timber there won't be a lack of them that is for sure.

Okay that may have been me with the vacation mix up. I'll blame the yellow jacket sting and a surplus of Benedryl and SIngulair in my system for that one, duh.

Ever since I saw Chis' barns we have used the deep litter method and not had a problem with smell or fly's.

The deep litter still freezes in the winter, and it's hard to open the door (into the coop) when it gets deep and frozen. I thought deep litter had to be on dirt floor for best results?

The deep litter in our coop stays pretty dry so really doesn't freeze. Even when the run is a muck mess. Mine's a dirt floor but my dad had a wood floor in his big coop with no rot for decades.

Mine floor stayed dry using deep litter now with letting the three outside
kitties we raised in my old Shasta prowling for moles and mice and me
they crawl up the tarp into the chicken yard their claws playing hell
on the tarp causing it to leak.. I use the deep shavings myself

My coop has a wood floor covered with heavy duty rubber tarp.

Joe was on BYC 1 day 15 hours ago. His last post was 2 weeks ago.

Maybe we will hear from him soon with an update.

Yes he has moved to Texas, he's been posting on BYH on his "Latestarter's journey to farming" thread. Supposed to close on the house today. He got a "until closing" lease so he and Mel have been in the house for a week or so. He just got internet at home in the last day or two. Prior posts were from his car outside a hotel that had free wifi so he wasn't posting much. I expect we'll hear more from him soon.
