The Old Folks Home

grandmas birthday was July 16 she was born in 1916

She was one of nine... and the youngest. The oldest was her Brother Charlie... He was already in the military... World War I... she didnt meet him till he came back and was married.

Shes seen alot of changes in the world been part of them too. A Rosie the Riveter during world war II. Working on a dismantling crew. She and her best friend would be assigned a plane to dismantle... Every screw and rivet would be removed and salvaged if possible. These were planes that had been shot down and recovered.

We had a birth day party for her and there were thirty guests.... Average age was 80

  I never thought of this!  They must be horrified at the dry food we give them and want fresh!

We buy the expensive cat food for this one, ain't like one little kitty can eat much anyway. Cat food is way different than dog food, super high in protein, 40%, or close to it. Many use good cat food to up their chickens feed protein when need be, I see why now.
I hear many actually feed their cats raw chicken for their main feed. Think we might try it when I see chicken leg quarters go on sale for .28-50cents a lb again. Not going to feed the little thing our yummy super expensive freezer camp birds no way! Lol! :-D

Perchie.Girl, you talking about the dangers of having a dog around your 100 year old Grammy brought back a memory of a little Bichon/Lasa mix that I had back in my 30s. Little dog was too smart and too charming for his own good. When my mom was in declining health, they worried about her using her walker around Shadoe and our other dogs. I told them not to worry, they were no stranger to walkers and I was right. More than once I saw Shadoe walking with mom, leading her as she ambled along with her walker, staying ahead of her walker and occasionally turning around to see where she was and make sure she was following him. I also took him to the nursing home where my dad was (both were in poor health with dementia) and would turn him loose and tell him to go visit. After about 20 minutes or so, I would go looking for him and inevitably find him sitting on the end of a little old lady's bed and her feeding him cookies.

His coat was about 6 inches long and stood out making him look like a snow ball. One day one of the nurses asked me if I could take him to visit a new resident they had. She had been slow to settle in to her new home and had always had a dog in her life. They thought maybe Shadoe could cheer her up and make her more alert. Sure enough. I put him in her lap and these gnarled old hands slowly worked their way into all that hair and found the little dog underneath. They said it was the first time they had seen her smile.

Dogs and old people are magic, separate and together. What a treasure your Grammy is and what a loving granddaughter you are for keeping her safe. There will always be time for you to have your dream dogs but the time you can spend with your grandmother is limited. Enjoy every moment you can with her and give her a hug for me.

Thanks for bringing back some good memories for me.

Oh i know the value of doggies in nursing homes. and the need to have a little soul just to tend and love. Grandma was never a dog lover nor did she have "dog sense" when My Rosie lived here. She was constantly worried that Rosie would trip her.. so when Rosie passed I opted to wait. Grandma is still at home here... Takes her own showers, makes her bed every morning... I wont let her in the kitchen except to get ice for her water... Last time she decided I wasnt cleaning house well enough she fell in the kitchen when I had gone out on an errand.

Right now my son and I pretty much tag team staying with her. Hes in College so most days hes here several hours that lets me go out and do errands. I sleep with a baby monitor on at night so I can hear when shes up and about and if the noises dont sound right.

So At night I am hyper vigilant and sleep just isnt satisfying. At about two in the afternoon when my son is here I take a nap with the monitor OFF. I get a good hard sleep till about five. then I get up and start fixing dinner.

To be honest BYC is just about my only social outlet.....

Yep good quality catfood and or Dog Food is worth it. Not only does it supply thier needs well it does it in an efficient way. I always free fed my dogs and cats. But because the dog LOVED the cat food soo much I had to put the cat food up on the washer. or the cat tree.

I did buy a can or two of cheap canned food just for a treat or when I had to medicate. The sound of a can opening was also a good enticement to catch an errant critter for grooming or a trip to the Vet ....

Been there done that got the t-shirt. I was a caregiver to my parents for 20+ years so there isn't much I haven't either heard from other caregivers or experienced first handed.

Wait a minute......Dachshund sire Golden Retriever dam? That took more than a lot of will. That took good old American ingenuity and a step ladder.

What do you do with seven stuffed grocery bags of green tomatoes? Can't put all of them on the window sills.
Make some of them into sweet bread and butter green tomatoe pickles, love them on ham and cheese sandwiches.
