The Old Folks Home

That's very cool, Alaskan! What a fantastic thing to do! There is an Icelandic cemetery to the east of us...hubby showed it to me when we were going out. It's not on our land and we don't know who is buried there. We did go looking for it a couple of years ago but just couldn't see it with the over growth. (wrong time of year) It's very sad to think it may be lost. We should go this spring and look for it before everything grows up.

Your broody turkey sounds lovely in the sense that nothing would ever get her eggs or brood with her being like that. Quite like a range cow...which I only know from reputation. We don't have any cattle like that, too dangerous.
Is it common for turkeys to be that broody? I'm thinking of expanding the family to include turkeys, hopefully a nice pair. I'd love me some turkeys!!

I miss having turkeys. I always loved our turkeys. growing up.

I was just thinking...ok scheming, of how I can commandeer the big barn for the guineas for next winter. The two white keets I purchased in hoping for a male have turned out to be female so I'm going to be overrun with guineas if I keep all 8 females. DH is gonna be SO happy to hear about this.

Um, not.

Surprisingly the guineas have been decent with the hens. Certainly no worse than the top hens. All 13 guineas are in with the hens and chicks in the coop. I'm crate training the 5 males right now...I'm definitely finding the males to be worse with aggression with bossing and picking on the girls. Got chatting with a gentleman at the feed store who sounds like he wants the three males. Thus the crate training. There are a couple of females who are more aggressive that I've raised. I'm finding they might be a bit like roosters...a pain in the butt while their young and maturing...but quite decent and behaved once they've gotten older. My older girls are better behaved.

I'm not sure if it's common for turkeys to go broody but all mine (heritage breed and heritage breed crosses) have. This one has been broody since... august maybe? I would try to break her but I enjoy the full use of my limbs.

SCG I think you need to don a Big Bird costume and give that broody turkey a REAL Bite! How long does it take to hatch turkey eggs? Is she even sitting on real eggs?

28 days for turkey eggs. I gave her some chicken eggs but my fertility has been crap even in the incubator. Hers rotted. She's got something under her now, don't care if it is snake eggs at this point or even a baby giraffe. She can have it.

She sounds like the Silkie I have...although my Silkie's no where as vicious sounding as your turkey! Which is a good thing.

I was just looking up turkey prices the other night. I'd love to have a pair...I can only guess how over run I'm going to get if I go this way.:/

Can't wait to see a pic of it when it is done. Glad you did it. Cemeteries preserve history too.
Diva that broody turkey is still broody and still a nasty piece of work. She bit me last week through my winter coat and my arm bruised pretty bad.

Wow Scg that's terrible! My girls stayed broody and never got any eggs to hatch. I know it was my set up for them because I hatched a bunch of their eggs in the bator.
The only way I got my two to get over being broody was to take their nest away. Can you move her in with someone else that does not have a nest?

I have a hen like that :/ I have to let her hatch out or else she'll try starving herself to death to hatch. She gave me three pretty chickies a few days ago so that a start, she and them are in a cage to be kept safe, can't wait for dad to pick up chick feed tomorrow for them. Been feeding oatmeal (ground then soaked) and eggs to them, the latter she won't touch :th

I know I need to break her. I have a hen that went stubborn broody like this for months, and was starving to death. She was so sweet, one of my favorites, and so eventually I let her hatch. I have let this turkey have eggs, but they're just not panning out into chicks. I should have given her a chick when I hatched a month ago but ... well hindsight, you know. I'd break her nest up but really I'm concerned about losing digits at this point. I was in the coop panicked one night that I came home late, trying to find Miss Piggy - thought she might be under the nesting boxes - not paying attention when the nasty turkey sprang into nest protect mode and got my elbow. She grabbed hard onto the flesh and started shaking it like she was trying to rip it from my body. I'm still bruised there. And that was through a down winter coat. I really have zero desire to get in there and break her up.

Maybe I could get a super soaker or something.
