The Old Folks Home

Also finished this quilt top today. I've got another quilt that's already quilted that I just need to bind (snowman in the window) that I should hopefully get to tomorrow, then I need to figure out how to quilt this baby.

Absolutely love this!! Great fabric choices! Can't wait to see it finished!

(I know you don't hand quilt but I didn't see a machine quilting smiley)

@getaclue Just have to thank you for the tip on basil for the flies. I hung fresh basil all over my coop and have let it dry. There is not one single fly in there, masses outside though. I am so grateful and owe you big time. Think I will have to plant acres of Basil.

I (not me) had some new year babies they can eat in peace it is wonderful.

That is fantastic!!!

I hope that the Basil will work on my NC flies, they are real stubborn about leaving a area that has been sprayed or treated.

I hope Basil works for your flies!

I have an uphill battle there, because we have cattle, cattle sheds and thus flies. We try to select breeding stock (both sheep and cattle) who don't attract flies. Obviously it's a long process because it's not the only thing I select for...lol.

I just looked up basil...there's A LOT of varieties. What varieties have been working for people? I won't be able to get my basil out until later spring. I may start it in the house. I've been wanting to start a small garden in the house; I've got to get my green thumb out of storage.

I use the ordinary basil for cooking 'big leaf' grows like wild fire in house and outside but not in cold.. Works an absolute treat honestly
and also has 'calming' properties so great for chicks.

Actually have planted purple basil but the best is the big leaf one the Italians use, smells the strongest. Now hanging it from the tree outside - However I still have a huge pigeon problem so that is my next project.

Thank you for that info whoop! Stores here will start putting out seeds fairly soon...so I'll be watching for seeds. I probably won't be able to get any started outside until May or June but the flies are the worst from mid summer until late fall so that will work. (perhaps it will keep me calm as well!)

So you have a pigeon problem too? The guys have been working on the ones that nest in our equipment sheds. I really like pigeons and always wanted some. I wish they'd stay where they didn't bother us.
We've also got a huge problem with sparrows. But apparently we have a small falcon that's the size of a pigeon that's busy taking down the sparrow population.

I hope he stays around. He's not big enough to hurt the chickens but he may be an issue with the chicks. I'm sure I can work around it if he stays. He's doing more good than harm

Send the falcon, infact send me every falcon ever - I have a small 'falcon type bird' but she/he is on his own and too small for the mass of doves/pigeons I have. Think it is a sparrow hawk (lol) and is quite small, couldn't cope with the mass of doves/pigeons. I don't live near vultures but wish I did. I love birds but these are just rats from the skies. We have had so much building going on here they have destroyed all the trees therefore most of the wild birds have departed. I have planted so many trees but they take time to grow.

I suppose it is all my fault because I feed the birds, but the doves/pigeons just come in droves. Now getting the builder to add a steel cage to fasten on to the chook house with a door so that I can feed chooks. Maybe they flying 'rats' will leave if they can't get food. They know exactly when I go out to feed the chooks and wait 'till I leave. They get stuck in the feeding containers and die because its so hot and they can't back down - it is a nightmare.
