This might be a silly question but can chickens be......umm......developmentally challenged? I swear I have a cockerel that is a couple bubbles off on the scale of chicken normalacy. He's a year old, never crowed, never fought with the other roosters although he hangs with them and they don't really mind him being around. Shows no interest in the hens. Has an undersized comb and wattles. He eats well but tends to be a bit on the thin side. I hand feed him treats a lot trying to put some meat on his bones and he's almost funny to watch when he eats. While the other chickens peck at food, he gobbles it. I've watched him and at times he sort of turns his head opens his beak wide and scoops up a mouthful. What's funny is that he is the sweetest bird for a rooster. So sweet that I swear until he was 6 months old I swore he was a pullet, thus the name Rosie. Given that he's a boy I changed it to Rose Bud and call him Buddy now.

I told my husband tonight that I was starting to think that we had a special needs rooster. I have no idea what is going on with him. No plans to get rid of him. It's nice having a rooster around that lets me pet and cuddle him, even if he is a bit rough feathered and goofy looking....not to mention acting. If he tries to breed one of the hens I'll have to move him to a different pen. One Buddy is fun a whole bunch of them...........nah.

Ok first I have no idea why but to clear brush although they go for good grass and leave the brush...
@microchick maybe we all could use a buddy
