The Old Folks Home

I don't think I'll get to cleaning the eggs today. Babysitting the dishwasher right now (it won't fill properly) and the egg bowl I use is in there.

Like Ron I also need to clean, specifically around the microwave so the guys can move the new one in. This one has almost died. It stopped turning off when we open the door and last night it kept dying. It's time.

Right now I'm icing so I'm ready for vaccinating...lol. Multitasking...

I hope you get a very nice microwave!

It was 71 here today. Just perfect. No wind, sun shining. I went out, saw about 10 hens in the coop sitting around on the roosts like a bunch of gossipy women and started grabbing them and stuffing them out the pop door. They would try to come back in and I would just push their fluffy butts back out. The roosters were delighted. The hens not so much. I told them to hit the ground running and don't look back. I then shut the pop door and told them to go take a dirt bath so I could at least air out the coop with a fan. I need to pick up more pine chips this next week and start spring cleaning. When I do that, I need to paint the coop ceiling, treat the coop for mites, change the nesting box bedding and then treat the chickens with Ivermax.

In the mean time, DH and I spent the afternoon down at our pond clearing out some brush left over from last year.

Alaskan, I feel guilty. It's so beautiful here and you are plowing snow.

Of course, I've been there and done that in February so I guess I'll just relish the nice weather while it lasts. I actually saw a chance for snow later on in the week.

Glad you're out, Al.

Whatchall got planned for this weekend?

I gotto run a bale of hay up to the house. neighbor didnt call me till he had fed the last bale. Shes good till Monday... They closed the freeway due to wind so I hope I can get up there by Monday.

Little chicks (or guinea keets) sure are tempting aren't they?

What they say versus what they mean:
About guinea fowl

PLEASE: Remember to check date AVAILABILITY for your purchase before placing your order.
An interesting and high-value addition to your farm or acreage, guinea fowl:
  • have great personalities. No, they're jerks.
  • will act as the farm yard watch dog, sounding the alarm whenever anything unusual occurs. They're insanely loud and they will become insanlier loud when something out of the ordinary or dangerous occurs, like a leaf falling. You will know when every leaf falls.
  • will consume large amounts of insects. They have to, because they'll never be penned in to eat the pellets.
  • will seldom bother your garden or flowers. Because they're too busy making loud noises at the scary plants.
  • are easy and inexpensive to raise. I think they need to look up the definition of easy.
  • fend for themselves, living on insects, seeds, and grasses. They have to, because you'll give up on getting them in the coop.
  • control deer ticks, wood ticks, grasshoppers, box-elder bugs, flies, crickets, fire ants and all other insects. And neighbors.
  • and their call will discourage rodents. I must be part rodent. The squirrels and rats could care less if a guinea honks at them. It drives me insane.
  • will kill snakes. My chickens do, too, and they're a lot friendlier.
  • will alert you to anything unusual. See also: every falling leaf.

SCG you forgot the part about them roosting in insanely high places and not coming down.

While you are at it, you should warn people about broody turkeys- oy vey! It would be a public service.

This was posted by a member in our Washington State thread laughed so hard I cried

A man on a donkey was taking a pair of young chickens to market with one tucked under each arm. The stubborn donkey decided to stop and no amount of prodding would get it going again. The man dismounted but, with a chicken under each arm, he was unsuccessful in pulling the donkey forward. He decided it was time to apply some motivation from behind. He needed to hold the donkey's lead rope with two hands to keep him from running off once he got the animal moving and he did not want to lose hold of the two chickens at the same time so he asked a gentleman passing by, "Excuse me sir, will you hold my cock and pullet while I kick my a s s?"

ron made more bread. Yum.. :)

Deb, it's windy here today too. We live down from a canyon, always .. well most of the time, wind in the morning. Today..all day.

Wicked..a new microwave! You have to have one for sure. Glad you are getting one. You will love that everything is working again. :)

Alaskan, sure glad you got out..that's a lot of snow..and sure glad ours has melted. Now we have more on the way in a few days..so they say. May just be rain.
And, man, I wish I had the land for some guineas! My grandmother may as well of had them, neighbors birds always came over to be around the geese she had.

I keep taking my Uggums off the nest. She's stuck though. :/ Hope she gives it up soon. She's been trying for weeks already. If the weather stays warm, and dry, will have to put her in the broody breaker. Late though for doing this. Can't fit in the run, so couldn't put her in there when I first noticed.

Shopping and house work today. Of course, animals taken care of. Dogs, chickens, fish, finches. :D

The bread was good!

I used raw sugar for the sweetener and butter for the oil. I also added some lecithin and two eggs.

It made great pastrami sandwiches for lunch!
