I have a bucket set up with nipples but I've never tried to switch them over to it simply because it isn't feasible to use the water nipples over the winter months. I could probably keep the water in the bucket from freezing but I'd be forever dealing with iced up water nipples.

I use nipples all year long but not the bucket kind I have the ones that use pvc pipe you can get the heated wrap for the pvc pipe and it will not freeze

How do the nipples do in sub zero weather? We can get some pretty cold stretches here in January especially. Right now I'm using an Orscheln heated water bowl over the winter months. I'd like to get away from it as the roosters tend to dunk their wattles and are at higher risk for frost bite. I didn't have trouble with frost bite this winter as I have with the past as they were in a better insulated coop this year.

I would think they would work better than standing water I could wrap my pipes in insulation with heat tape to keep from freezing would give enough heat for the nipples then the tank can be placed inside where heat is avalable if need be I have what one would call a 33gal gravity tank system I fill once a week in the summer but an putting another one up for my second coop also

I've heard the nipples thaw out easy just by placing your bare hand on them for a bit if your using the bird bath heater in the bucket. I didn't want to take any chances or invest in three heaters and long extension cords so just went back to the rubber pans and knocking the ice out for the winter.

You could be very correct about losing members. There have not been many posts today on the Easter Hatch a long thread which is odd considering this is day 4 chicken incubation.
I'm here, just feeling crappy. It seems that Miss Maddy has given me her flu. She is feeling much better, and taking great care of her Mamaw. She made me tomato soup and little cornbread muffins for lunch today.

Ya Ive been to Arizona a couple times that was enough for me!

Hey Ron I added Ad blocker plus and it stopped the problem, now I can type! Jerryse told me to, and I recall you said you use it. But I did not know all that trouble came from
these dang ads.

Ad blocker does work! Only problem once in a while, is that some things that I have been using for free, has started to only allow me a certain amount of usage on sites..because, I blocked their ads. They make money .. of course with their ads. So, am using my block..just paid for .. one.. of my sites I like.

Little delayed on smoking venison pepperoni and bologna. Can't locate 10lbs of pork fat. Place I used to get it for yrs cheap .25-.49cents lb no longer sells it unless I pay $3.99 lb same as their sausage. Another place is $1.49 lb but says it's hit and miss and they have none to spare cause the hogs are coming in pretty lean and very little trimmings. What the heck, growing out lean hogs...
Then my big water bath canner sprung a leak so I had to use a smaller one. They don't make those things very heavy duty anymore.
Next yr I'm getting a new barrel and cutting/welding a flat top on it and getting a big deep stainless square pan to put on it, more evaporation area.
Ohh well deal with what I got now.
May have to spend $20 added to my expenses just to get the roni and bologna done... Only decent butcher shops are a two hr round trip. And I don't know anyone butchering round here wrong time of yr, and they usually throw xtra fat on bait piles for coyotes.
Anyway my makeshift thrown together system just fired up so not boiling yet. Did have more stove pipe to get the smoker further away but it fell apart rusty.
