The Old Folks Home

Already told my wife that I'm going to build another coop to separate the bantams and the larger birds but I think I'm building two coops[/quote

Had that conversation with my son in law today. Planning on converting a wooden swing set into an A frame bantam coop. The acclimation of the 2 month old EEs and black australorps is not going well at all. The bigger hens are being awful. So I also see a coop 3 in the near future.

Pretty much.

Greetings @Ronnie2 and welcome to BYC and the old folks home. Good to see you've already settled in for a stay. There are several other bee keeps here and I'd like to ask you some Q's since I'm a few hours north of you in Mount Pleasant and have 2 used lang hives sitting in my shed. I'm really concerned do I want to start this up again with there being AHB's here. The other thing is where to place them on my place that the animals or me myself don't "set them off" and get attacked. Any insights would be appreciated. I'm thinking I need a full body suit for protection.

Quote: Lol...yep. I get 1/3 cut from the cattle. I made 5K less this year alone from selling the feeders. Ouch.

This farm used to employ 5-7 people full time from spring-fall, one part time and one cook/housekeeper. Three full time in winter and me on call and one part time.
Now it's just DH and me full time all year long, our uncle for seeding and when he's available (he seems to be retiring) and our kid. On the plus side I never get bored.

Fashionable? Of course! In my "men's" sweat pants ($12.00) instead of the $25

Hey I got pockets! Chickens don't care if I look like a Greek goddess or a lumpy person with pockets.
(Ahem....wash day's tomorrow.)

Yeah, I'm still trying to convince DH that 2 bantams equals one hen.......he ain't buyin it.
DH is a fan of the bantams here. Wishes all the chickens were bantams. I could have like...thousands!

Boy oh boy I have been taken by TSC!! I have been purchasing oyster shells ground up an 9 dollars a 10 lb bag I went Saturday morning to the local hardware store where I get my feed and instead of running to TSC to get my hay and oyster shells I have as getting ready to pay and he ask me if I needed anything else and I said no I gotta get the rest at TSC so he ask me what I was looking for I said I need a bail of hay and oyster shells he said 5.99 a bail and 6.39 for 50 lb of oyster shells. I looked at him funny but said ok I'll get that here I didn't know you carried that too. So I built me a container/ feeder out of a tidy cat bucket and its full of oyster shells now for the birds as they need it and what I spilled on the ground was gone in about 10 minutes lol was tired of just giving them a little at a time they always seemed to want more than I could afford but now!! Have at it babies!
If it helps our oyster shell. (I think it's 50 lbs) is $25/bag. I keep 2 margarine dishes in rotation for the shells from the eggs we eat.

When the shells are 2 days old, I crush them down into fine pieces and feed them back to the girls. Haven't run out of shells...yet.

Welcome new peeps!

I didn't get much done in the garden today. I divided the chives and my chocolate mint and pulled a few weeds but I kept getting distracted by ducklings.

Little Sticky is still quite a bit smaller than the others. He is also pigeon toed. Feisty feller, though.
