The Old Folks Home

I absolutely hate everything about the death of animals/birds. I just called it for one of the two chicks I hatched. The cool temps are likely to blame...so my fault entirely. It hatched like that. I tried orthopedic taping of the chick's feet and the legs. But it didn't help and the chick was only going to suffer. It finally couldn't stand. It was the vocal one who was always sounded so happy.:(

Well, just when I thought things were settling down....silly me, I saw momma Sparkle become unbroody right before my eyes. I caught her tossing poor little Lucky across their little pen and when the poor baby ran back up to her, she pecked at it and went back to preening her feathers. THAT was the last straw. Poor baby was sitting in a corner confused so I just reached in and took it out of danger, Told Sparkle that she was officially finished with being broody and after taking baby and putting it under a heat lamp in a box, deposited momma back in the bantam pen and told Oliver she was all his. Of course she tried that fluff up dancing don't touch me I'm broody dance and I told her it wasn't getting her anywhere. She was through. Luckily Orscheln's still has chicks and were down to two bantams. I told them I didn't care what color, breed or sex they were, I needed them, mark them sold and I'd be right there. DH said I must have been going about 80 on the interstate. Nope, 65 all the way to Kirksville and back with two little 2-3 week old OEGB pullets in their travel box beside me. I could hear Lucky crying the minute I walked in the door.

I was a bit nervous about putting poor little lucky in with two older chicks, No problem. They are buds already and I just saw one of the little pullets give Lucky a piece of egg to eat,

My last egg was DOA. I eggtopsied it and it looks like it was a victim of whatever happened between the two hens yesterday. It had internally pipped and was in position to externally pip but it looks like there was a bit of unabsorbed yolk sack that ruptured, probably in the 'chick fight.

Needless to say I'm pretty disappointed in the OEGB mature pullets at the moment. DH said he was amazed they both didn't wind up in the soup pot after the fiasco this hatching turned into because of them.

Oh well, can't blame chickens for acting like chickens.

I do have my camera lenses covered but I'm curious about the USB port covered.
Very happy to hear the chicks are already friends. That's always a relief.

It's unfortunate that the egg was likely disrupted by the silly girls. I've only had one oegb I've kept broody and she couldn't be put with the Silkies...I had to cage her separately. The Silkies co-broodied.

Chickisoup, I am so sorry. You and I have had a tough week with our chickens.

Yes, her passing was a peaceful one. Not much more any one of us can wish for a beloved pet than to quietly slip from one life to the next with a single breath and in their sleep.

Hugs to you and poor little Einstein. She must be lonely for her friend.:hugs

Glad Sparkle has a family now.

USB ports are covered so someone can't slip one in, and either put a program on your computer, copy point of entry codes, passwords, etc. personal information, and the like, so they can gain access to your computer, and identity.

Well, Mz Dumpling, my last Mareks survivor finally crossed over the bridge. She was cuddled and spoiled and she had a very good last week. I had tried a "hail Mary" with Sulfa drugs and she actually perked up and was more active for a few days. Our weather finally broke and she could stretch out in the warm sun with her little buddy Einstein to keep her company in their own private patch of grass. She was never in any real pain that I could tell, but the last couple days she was able to move around less and less, choosing instead to find a comfy spot in the grass and watch her friend. I would carry her in at dusk and she no longer tried to climb up to the roost or into the nestboxes, instead snuggling into the hay I put down for her next to the waterer. I wasn't surprised to find her lying still in the hay this morning. Last night when I did the final check, instead of going up on the roost as normal, little Einstein chose to stay on the floor too, guarding her friend. After all the other hens rushed out to start the day, back up on the roost, Einstein sat quietly and just watched as I gently took her friend away. It was sad but good too, I could tell her passing was quiet, safe and warm in her coop, with her friend at her side, no more pain.
Oh how sweet... .... :love bitter but sweet.... sigh. :hugs
