The Old Folks Home

Ain't reading 200+ posts, hope I didn't miss much. Skimmed some. Got our internet back Mon, ten days...twice, thur/fri said they'd be out, liars...
We have Frontier for phone/high speed dsl/dish network package $110 mo bundled for yrs now. No other options here, live too far from town for cable and that's $$ I think anyway but would be nice to have competition. Actually as I type this I'm a thinking maybe that's why they were slow/jerks been trying to get us off our plan for yrs now even offer free stuff, still will cost more monthly, no not interested.
Our internet is pretty fast, not everyone's is here, in-laws up the road dsl is as slow as old dial up it seems. Ours we can have all the kids on their devices me and DW on ours and have Netflix on and it never buffers, plays straight through good as the dish. We dropped the dish to lowest package after we tried to drop it and just get the phone and net, would cost us more they said to not keep the dish....? Lol

Ohh, and DW who demanded cutting down #s would not OK my decision to get rid of giant's, apparently she likes them also. Well, no way am I getting rid of naked necks, will lower #s of course but keeping good breeding stock.
She insisted on keeping giant's, I might get in trouble, she doesn't know yet but there might be some youngsters soon Lol! :D setting on a dz

wickedchicken6 - I really hate that all those beautiful traditional old barns are reaching the end of their lives. Every time we have a wild storm in the flats, the next time we drive thru there is another one down. I would give almost anything to have one of them on our place. I so miss the look, the smell and feel of a well used and loved old barn.
DH told me tonight this house was built in 1917. The barn was built in 1913. I got that wrong.

I'm sure the flood took it's toll on the structural integrity. We could have cried...it's never seen a flood in all those years. DH opened up all the doors to let the water through...it's all we could do. This picture is after the flood dropped about a foot. The boy took the video while we were trying move everything out.

I forgot...the barn also survived the tornadoes that went through about the same time. Everyone west of us got hit...it jumped over us and did damage further east. The rain was hitting the house sideways...that's never a good thing....lol.

It's nice having it here but very hard to secure it with the openings it has. My idea is to secure the main bottom area and put the guineas in there for winter.

Floods don't happen here much in the hils but dealt with some recently. Near the rivers they're used to it, had runoff floods hit hard last ten yrs or so. Heard fire department say they'd rather fight a fire any day than deal with a flood, can't control water.

I am so sorry you have had a heck of time there

There are those types of roofs here for bales/machinery. I see how useful they'd be in your neck of the woods. Here it blows snow on the bales in during winter. I'm not sure what good the roof does other than shade the hay from the sun. I guess that's a good thing...but still.

The stacks on the pallets are what we used to make...except no pallets. That's before there were pallets everywhere. I didn't enjoy making the stacks.

Now I know to put pallets under my bagged shavings. :he I bought a pallet of them...and we stacked them in the one stall in the barn. The floor's cement and it's covered in straw. The bottom of the shavings has molded! :barnie I didn't think it would've done that with the straw as a buffer. I was wrong. :hmm
Even in a dry garage you should have air space between the concrete and bags of anything or bales of hay. Concrete wicks moisture even in a dry climate. Thats why when ever you build a foundation or foundation wall there must be a vapor barrier between the concrete and the wood. AND the would should be pressure treated.

We get snow in winter and winds up to 80 mph at certain times of year including. Horizontal rain is not un heard of. Most people with hay shelters will fortify with Canvas curtains or simply cover their hay.

Mine is exactly like the one I showed in the picture. maybe a little lower pitch on the roof. Rated for 100 mph wind gusts and snow about a foot thick. The plan was, to build Two walls about half height. to shelter the hay from the prevailing wind directions. I have the materials just no workforce...

speaking of graduations... My son just filled in his paperwork to graduate from San Diego State.... :th

just a couple of weeks ago he was applying for his grant money for the next two semesters... He figured he had that many courses to take to graduate.
He tried to contact the department head to sign off on a couple of classes he took in lieu of others.

Department head was on vacation... So when they finally connected and my son went in for the conference the department head was looking at his transcripts. First thing out of his mouth... "Youve been going here long enough lets see if we can get you graduated." he started checking off things and writing and finally came up with. 'All you have to do is take this one single online class this semester and your done...'

Yay... scared the crap out of my son though... So in December he gets his Bachelors of Arts in Geology. :ya And a minor in English. He may go on to get his Masters of Fine Arts in Writing.... But I suspect hes pretty much done with school for now.

I have seen where they tear down the barns and sell the lumber by the board foot and get a lot of money for it. Here in Virginia, there are lots of old tobacco barns made of logs with red mud in between to fill the cracks . Who knows how old those are?
I've seen articles from the west part of Canada where people are stealing boards from older board fences for the livestock and such....lol. It's not very funny for the landowner who keeps having to replace the boards.

That would be very doable here if we wanted. The outside of the barn has always been kept painted so the wood would have all the character and still be in good shape. This house has amazing wood! All hardwood floors. It could certainly be dismantled and sold as well. I feel safer in this house when there's tornado warnings because it's such a beast of a house with the old strong wood. It has 3 levels in addition to the basement. Our house is a split level and all open. If it starts to go...everything will go...lol.
