The Old Folks Home

I dislike blackberry seeds with an incredible passion, don't care about tomato seeds at all. Those seeds are soft.

Back to work today.

It was very nice to sleep in an actual bed with actual sheets and an actual available spider free bathroom.

That being said, 3 nights of barely sleeping has taken its toll. Despite sleeping uninterrupted until 3 am, I feel like something the dog dragged in.

Last I posted, was a photo of my pup..that I have here on my phone. But...where in the world are my photos I had here on BYC before the change. I've never found them!
Last I heard, all pictures that were in albums moved, but, pictures that were just uploaded without giving them a specific place didn't move and went poof.

That is my understanding. Now for pictures to say, you need to upload them to an album

Sorry for your loss, Alaskan. It's a bummer no matter how you loose them to a predator.

I spoke too soon about not loosing any chickens to Marek's the other day. I went out last night to do late feeding and watering and found one of my Buff O/Welly cross girls with occular Marek's has a really bad flare going on her her affected eye. Instead of that odd green/grey color they get with pin point pupil, her eye is bright blue. The whole eye. It's swollen and causing her discomfort. Sigh, one of my favorite hens also. Very sweet and gentle natured, always wanting to be picked up and will 'hug' you by pressing her body against yours when you do. DH gave me some anti viral salve to put in her eye and I gave her a baby aspirin. Not much else I can do except wait and see what happens.

@penny1960, I wish I had dentures sometime, at least an upper plate. I have lost a lot of teeth to a congenital tooth disease. I'm down to ten uppers and ten lowers, a huge bridge on the lowers and a partial plate on the uppers. The partial is painful to wear and is causing my teeth to shift around so my bite is off. I'm ready to call it quits with the uppers. I was told an upper plate would be no problem but lower would be. I've lost a lot of bone to surgeries and any fit on the lowers would be tricky at best.

Still, nothing like getting a seed caught under the partial or under the bridge.

So we are down to two kittens left. The people really love Pounce and said he is amazing! The rest of them were tearing around the house having a grand time last night. I got out some beef jerky and every pet here was gathered around wanting some!

Ls I also dislike seeds.
I have denture's I got my upper first and love it. I got the lower done about a year ago and hate it. I should have gone back to the first dentist to get my lower one done or an oral surgeon.
I was left with sharp broken bone shards sticking g out of my gums in many places that I had to wear my denture to grind down. Very painful.
And my mouth is so small they had to use the smallest set to make my denture but I don't have room enough in my mouth to bite into most foods with my denture's in. It can be very embarrassing times.

My dh is facing the same thing he has a very small mouth and his teeth are so small you can hardly tell he has any. So go to an oral surgeon and get the denture put in at the same time. Use ice packs for 12 hours then you won't swell up.

Yep, I have the small mouth problem also which lead to crowded teeth. A dentist once told me that most of my tooth structure was in root. Big roots small teeth.

I had my lower bridge made about 7 years ago and am not happy with it at all. It functions well but looks bad. Take my advice, if you have a dentist/friend who is doing the work for you don't let them. No way you can gracefully tell them that their work sux and you aren't happy with it.

Just checked the birds and let them loose in the run for the day. Hen with MD flare in her eye is slightly better. She is holding her eye open for short periods of time. I feel so sorry for her. Herpes infections are so painful in humans. I can only imagine that it is the same for all of God's creatures. She is such a good little patient though, making little purring sounds while we work with her. It's always the good ones, isn't it?

CRAP!!!! smiley-face-swearing.gif
Hi everyone :frow
I got busy finishing up outside for a few days and it took me over an hour to get caught up! (40+ pages) I had a BUNCH of quotes saved but when I went to list them, POOF!
So anyway, I will try to remember.

Welcome to 2 new peeps, always room for one more here! welcome.jpg

Glad to hear the good reports from the Florida hurricane. My granddaughter was finally able to get back to the zoo and get on with helping with the cleanup. Her place survived but the zoo took a direct hit and is a mess. No animals lost but most of the support buildings, gift shops, etc. as well as trees, fences and enclosures suffered major damage. Deb-as far as I know from GD the animals were secured in their concrete storm proof shelters on site Moving them would have been a logistical nightmare.

Alaskan - sorry for your loss. A Goshawk? wow. :fl No more losses. Sounds like you have been having some lousy weather. We're still setting records here. It's going to be in the mid 70's here again today!!! The poor plants are so confused! Some of the trees are in peak color but my chives and lavender have started blooming again!:thI'm ready to put everything to bed for the winter. At this rate I won't be able to put my garlic in the ground until November.

Hi Micro!!!:frow Glad to see you again :hugs So sorry to hear you are still fighting the Mareks' battle. :( I've been eyeing my 3 adults (the one that never showed symptoms and the 2 new I added last year as chick before the last 2 died) all summer and all are still looking good. My new little velociraptors are the healthiest (and craziest active) chicks I've ever had. :fl

It is time for fowl pox around here. I have not had it though so there must not be an infected flock close enough for mosquitos to spread it. You can still protect the rest of the flock though:

Prevention and Treatment:

Where fowlpox is prevalent, chickens and turkeys should be vaccinated with a live-embryo or cell-culture-propagated virus vaccine. The most widely used vaccines are attenuated fowlpox virus and pigeonpox virus isolates of high immunogenicity and low pathogenicity. In high-risk areas, vaccination with an attenuated vaccine of cell-culture origin in the first few weeks of life and revaccination at 12–16 wk is often sufficient. Health of birds, extent of exposure, and type of operation determine the timing of vaccinations. Because the infection spreads slowly, vaccination is often useful in limiting spread in affected flocks if administered when <20% of the birds have lesions. Passive immunity may interfere with multiplication of vaccine virus; progeny from recently vaccinated or recently infected flocks should be vaccinated only after passive immunity has declined. Vaccinated birds should be examined 1 wk later for swelling and scab formation (“take”) at the site of vaccination. Absence of “take” indicates lack of potency of vaccine, passive or acquired immunity, or improper vaccination. Revaccination with another serial lot of vaccine may be indicated.

Naturally infected or vaccinated birds develop humoral as well as cell-mediated immune responses. Humoral immune responses can be measured by ELISA or virus neutralization tests.
