The Old Folks Home

Sounds like a perfect time of year!
Best time, and weather, for getting any manual outside labor done and you don't have to worry about mowing the lawn!!! Or shoveling the snow. Just occasional mud until the ground freezes up.

The last of the manual labor, which is usually just minor projects like putting the gardens to bed or finishing touches on the larger ones, and tree maintenance of course, falls to me now as DH busy getting with his prepping for filling our freezer with venison. He hasn't hunted the last two years. First because he was taking care of me after my accident (or should I say watching me like a hawk so I stayed put while I healed :smack) and next year he just didn't feel he could (so he said) but I think it was more that he didn't think I would be able to help him drag one out if he needed help but now he can see my leg is good, enough, that we can do it and a nice buck showed up on our trail cam so he's anxious to get back at it.

Dh was looking into bread makers, and commented that the one he was looking at would do cornbread too. I don't think so! When it comes to cornbread, I like whole cake, which is cooked on the stove, in a cast iron skillet. He loves my cornbread, but never really paid attention to how I made it. He thought all cornbread was baked. Uh, NO.

Love it someone else does it on the stove with the old skillet I have grandmas and the old glass lid love doing it that way.... Tell DH that the bread maker is for when your gone he will need it we have one never comes out of the cupboard :bun

That is great!
I need to do some work in the backyard this Fall. I want have a garden back there next year

The leaves are falling like crazy now and there are places where we can see through the timber and undergrowth. DH and Ijust got back from a walk back in the woods. Definitely my favorite time to enjoy the great outdoors. We are still mowing here but at least we aren't dying from the heat while we are doing it. The chickens enjoy the cooler weather, even the ones molting would rather be outside then inside. I've offered to make them little sweaters but so far, no takers. Considering my sewing skills, they probably are using good sense. :D

We have seen ticks so bad that we will walk across our front yard, come inside and pulled 5 or more off of our legs. I got in an argument with somebody once who swore that you could only get ticks by walking in tall grass. I said if that was true then why could I stand in the timber leaning against a tree, look over and see one crawling across the bark heading right for me? I've also seen them crawling up the posts in our barn.

uninformed person that.....

Even as a kid (before these super ticks we have now) the ticks would love to hide in tree bark. Swarms of them.

Picked my friend up from the airport. She brought a quilt to piece and then work on quilting. She's working on piecing it, still, should be done tomorrow. I hope. She's touched by adult ADD and I love her dearly but it's kinda like being in a room with a squirrel on amphetamines.

However, I am making a dent in my Xmas presents...

Finished the last 2 sets of pillowcases for my sister and her 4 kids, then finished the last 2 scrub caps for a surgeon I know (I mailed him the first I made earlier this week and luckily it fit his giant head so I was able to continue with my mission and not alter the pattern).

I appreciate the fact that the winter animals on those cases are wearing warm coats. Very nice. :D

Diva I'm getting a dog. When I told bf the phone auto corrected to God.

How about Zeus for a name? We will get it around xmas

So sorry about the dog. My condolences. :hug As to Nordic names...I like Olaf.

DW made one recently that she threw the apples in our salad shooter to slice them up. I think beings they were sliced thin and uniform they stuck together like really big pieces and just didn't cook through. I think quartered by hand unevenly they cook better, more space in between slices.

I think how the apples turn out is dependent on the kind of apple... sour, sweet, what have you. Some kinds want to cook to mush and others don't.

Ended up participating in wood processing party, wasn't that bad. Ended up Saturday having a guy from work fixing my bow, found out he is really in to bows and had a really nice $$ bow press, fixed the serving on my string knew how to wind and tie the right way and got the sting back on the cams (had a mishap second day of season and was really bummed out, new string is $40 + pressing and labor) he did it for free, ended up BS'ng with him for hours so didn't make it up to in-laws for duck out of cutting wood early.
Everybody worked hard, really happy with oldest DD's BF, future SIL maybe? He didn't get there as early as I did but bulled through the pile with the same vigorousness, proud of him . We ate it up, gone, in about six hrs no break. Three wood splitters going and they didn't even come close to keeping up.
And I ducked out before dinner, about 4:30? in the woods, love it, the smell, love out in the woods smell, quiet, no noise but nature , red squirrels running around, just out in the woods relaxing, almost fell asleep. Waiting for a deer, loving just being out there, saw no deer but OK, had a good day.

The main reason I loved hunting was just the quiet sitting.
