Winter is here. At least it feels like winter outside and we to are destined for our first hard freeze so today is hurry up and drain things day. Rain barrel needs emptied. We have a ground roller that is filled with water that needs drained. Need to put up the wood splitter. Grrrrr. I thought our mild weather was too good to be true.
Yesterday wasn't a very good day. Our Australian Cattle Dog that has Degenerative Myelopathy seems to be going down hill fast. He went for walks with us 2 out of three days and seemed to enjoy himself. He has trouble walking when he first gets up from a resting position then seems to get his legs under him and working in unison more or less. Yesterday it seemed to suddenly worsen so that he went from wobbling and staggering when he got up to dragging his left hind leg behind him and falling over, unable to walk at all unless we intervened and helped him. Finally we took a pool noodle and made a sling that we could slip under him and supply upward traction on his hind end. Once we did that, he took off and we could barely keep up with him.
He has gained weight from the prednisone therapy he is on and yesterday was the first day that we could visibly tell that he isn't enjoying life any longer. DH took him for a ride in the car which he loves dearly and he did perk up for that but otherwise, he is pretty sedentary right now and just sad.
Our rush is on to try and get his doggie wheelchair done so we can see if he is going to accept it or not. Accepting it will buy him more time but the poor boy felt so bad yesterday that he couldn't support himself enough to relieve his bladder and he was dribbling urine when he relaxed. He was finally able to walk a bit last night, enough that he could pee and poop if needed but this is more heartbreaking than Marek's to watch, and I have to agree with Penny that it is just the result of too much over breeding in dogs.
So that was my day yesterday. Pretty depressing really. This morning it is 35 degrees outside and the wind is gusting to 30. I did manage to get some peache pits planted. These pits are harvested from our own heirloom trees so we are hoping to get some of them to sprout. The peaches are smaller than the ones you buy at the store but very sweet. So we are keeping our fingers crossed.
I have one silly bantam hen who is just certain that she wants to set on a pile of eggs. Silly bird. I've had to shoo her off the nest and swipe her eggs three days now but I'm hoping to hold her off at least until spring. Hopefully the colder weather will cool her down a bit.
I'm ready for spring all ready, LOL.
