The Old Folks Home

We have lots of wild turkeys also, which is why I've been resisting temptation. I really love our wild turkeys.

So why, if there are wild turkeys running all over our property, am I fighting Marek's?? Is it a matter of proximity?
Could be, but any wild bird can carry it, right? Do your birds free range?

Okay, so what is the truth?

Will keeping turkeys along with chickens protect the chickens from Marek's?

I've read both yes, no, hog wash, maybe...sigh. Makes it hard to know what is fact and what is fiction.

Keeping a turkey around the chickens won't work. I believe this started because the vaccine uses turkey mareks.

I heard it was bad to keep turkeys with chickens because of black leg. I would house them separately. We have wild turkeys here, not sure what effect they might have.

Blackhead is a parasite that kills Turkeys. It is hard to get rid of because the medicine for it is restricted in the US. Advised husbandry is to keep chickens and turkeys separated because the chickens can be carriers

The disease in turkeys is called Black Head, not black leg. I think they get it from chickens because of some worms they eat. Or maybe not my mind is gone. But, I know
there is a chicken connection.
Are you sure Diva? Blackhead is a type of pimple!:lau
Eta, ok Ron is on your side, but it still sounds suspicious to me.:gig
