The Old Folks Home

abundantly aware not as likely is all we can do and be diligent ourselves most will at least hesitate facing three big dogs
Trust me Penny you can't get any more "small town" than where we are and still be called a town. Well, actually neither us or our friend are even in town (us 10 miles or so, our friend a few miles more) which consists of a 100 year old post office, a grocery just as old that still has it's warped, creaky wooden floors, a fire station mostly occupied by the forest service but also the volunteer fire dept., two taverns (it is WI after all), two churches, a small cafe and the K thru 12 school that serves the entire northern half of the county. Oh, and brand new (well only 25 yr old or so) gas station. The actual town I often refer to is the county seat and the only actual town in the county and is roughly 40 miles away. It contains the only two stoplights in the county, one where two highways meet on the south end and the other where two highways meet just north of town. Can't get much more country than that I'm thinking without moving to the north slope. Unfortunately the &%$# gangs from the cities to the south have figured out the folks up here can be some pretty easy pickins. Mostly they target the summer homes of the "snow birds" (they all fly south for the winter)that surround the tons of lakes up here. Or at least they used to until those folks got wise and no longer left anything of value behind. Anyway, my point, like Micros is that there is no such thing as "safe" anywhere anymore. Tho I do have to say there has only been one murder (still unsolved) in the whole county to my knowledge in the last 25 yrs. That one was so mysterious it even made it on one of those unsolved crime shows a few years ago.

we have one stoplight about a mile and half away at the road that leads into town from the highway.. closest town that has anything is Morton and it lost the only feed store for miles because of TSC .. like you if we went further up the mountain we would find more that would steal

I think I am officially sick of Christmas cookies.:sick I put a bunch in the freezer. DH said to leave them there for a few months.:gigHe's sick of them too.

I hear ya @chickisoup. The town in IL where we had our business had about 3200 people and one murder that happened during a bar fight during the 35 years that DH had his practice there. From what I hear, the victim needed killin'.

I can remember working in as a temp in a Peoria nursing home and listening to two of my aides talking about a young man who had been killed in a drive by shooting on the city's south side. The young man was an honor student and had been accepted by a college-the first of his family to have that honor. One of the aides was his cousin. I stood with my mouth hanging open and told them that I didn't understand how they could live like that and told them about my towns one murder in over 35 years. They were astounded that a place like that actually existed.

The time I spent in Juneau there was a murder of a gentleman you hear me talk of a double yellow head I flew North to his Daughter, to my knowledge had never been solved

I have to say that we do have our share of youthful alcohol fueled attacks of stupid on occasion, mostly in the summertime and adult alcohol fueled stupid mostly on Saturday nights in the winter. Oh, and the always amusing stupid that comes along with the deer hunters and snowmobilers that invade from the city each fall and winter (also often alcohol fueled). There was a local business man from the next real town to the north on TV the other night who is loving the late ice arrival this year. He's envisioning a very lucrative holiday season since he's already pulled two Illinois snowmobiles and one ATV out of the lakes and it's not even Christmas yet! Several of the snowmobile trails are opening sections this weekend, but not the parts that go across lakes, like some bar hopping fool going 70 mph in the dark is going to pay attention to the "this section closed" sign before he barrels out onto the water. Worse, they have been known to do this in broad daylight. They must assume the signage only applies to the locals. Could be an amusing weekend. These same locals have been known to sit on the shore in front of the taverns in lawn chairs and actually start betting pools on which "southerner" is putting their machines in first. Not nice, I know, but hey, they have to get their entertainment where they can find it in the winter time. In their defense, they do help if if one of them goes in with their machines.
