The Old Folks Home

Had an empowering day in Santa Fe working at the place. Took a day off from painting and -- attempting something I never have -- did wiring and affixing light fixtures...and they worked! So now there's a couple of new wall sconces, a chandelier, and an overhead bathroom globe where there wasn't one before. Saved a bundle from not having to have an electrician to come out out. My neck, upper shoulders and knees today are feeling the effects from all the ladder work, though.

Who from OFH is participating in the Easter HAL?

We use all terrain tires on all of our cars. Our road can go from zero to bog in 6 hours with ruts to your hubcaps. The All Terrain seem to handle the mud and the snow the best. None of our cars have AWD and we know we should have one that does but hey, they are paid for.

Our big problem here that the road commissioner hates is the damage the Amish buggies do to the roads with their metal wheels on their buggies. They crush the white rock and grind it into the dirt leaving clay to deal with.

Cats! That'll teach me to walk away from the computer for a minute!:gig

On the rare occasions that we have icy roads around here, the ditches get cluttered up with 4-wheel-drive SUVs. Nobody can walk on the stuff, why in the world do they think they can drive on it?!:idunno
My Grandpa said that a 4 wheel drive will just get you further and get you stuck deeper. He was talking about mud though.

It's still coming down - supposed to get another 4 to 6 inches today.

But I went out and snowblowed and rescued the ducks, goats and chickens.

And dog.

The dog did not understand why I wouldn't just open the door and let her in the house already. The yellow thing is my shovel.

Snowblowing out past the goats to the ducks. For scale my blower is 24 inches wide and 21 inches tall, and I wasn't hitting solid ground.

Best I could tell "mid thigh" is the number of inches we got.

Because they have 4WD! They are INVINCIBLE! Works the same way here, snow or ice. At least half the vehicles off the road are 4WD or AWD. If you don't have decent snow tires, best not go out when there is snow on the roads, you won't get "there". People do get away with using all seasons, mostly because the roads get cleared pretty quickly and in reality there is only snow on the paved roads maybe 5% of the winter. If you don't HAVE to go somewhere and you don't go on the dirt roads, especially during mud season and periodic minor thaws, you can choose to stay home.

AND some AS tires are better than others, I put Goodyear Assurance TripleTred All Season tires on my 2004 Prius 2 months after I got it (in Sept) replacing the POS stock Goodyear (total lack of) Integrity (in anything other than dry, no sand/grave/snow) tires. The TTs were quite good in snow, but they have a pretty aggressive tread for an AS tire.

Works the same in deep snow. Certainly it can be helpful getting going in more minor snow but people don't seem to understand that 4 wheel "drive" isn't 4 wheel "stop". You don't stop any better with 4WD, it is still the same 4 braking devices.
