The Old Folks Home

I spent as much time outside tonight as I could. Simply beautiful weather. I told DH I could live with today's weather for the rest of my life. Temp in the high 70s. Plenty of sunshine. No wind. Ahhhh, I love spring!

My strawberries are starting to ripen. I'm hoping that I'll get enough for at least two shortcakes so I covered them with netting tonight to ward off rabbits and birds.

Then I wandered out to the coop and snapped this pic of Daisy with her 4 week old chicks. She's just such the fierce little mommy. I've been trying to catch her with her babies on the roost bar outside the nesting boxes and tonight was the night:

I just love it when the chicks peek out from under Mom to see what's going on outside.

Then I invaded the maternity ward to see what progress if any the eggs were making that my four broodies are sitting on. It's a little early, day 5 but the way these girls have been playing pass the egg I was expecting the worse. 90% of the 16 eggs they are on look like they are developing.

These three hens are so funny. While I was getting pecked and growled at, one of the hens was trying to steal eggs as I was candling them. She even stuck her head under another hen trying to snare herself an egg. No way that was going to happen with the lighter colored hen. That girl is a commando when it comes to protecting her eggs.

I considered separating them into their own nesting boxes but they are very happy with one another as room mates and every time I try to move one of them, they just screech at me and flee back to the maternity ward as I have come to call it.

Hatching time should be very interesting.

Oh, almost forgot. When I had chemo this last time, for whatever reason, I didn't like the artificial taste of Kraft, or Velveeta cheese. I changed to a real cheese. I decided to bake a ham for supper tonight. Dh informed me he wanted me to make the box of Kraft mac & cheese, so he could have REAL mac & cheese for a change. Seriously?
crazy man.

kid number 2 asked me how much money we were saving now that kid 1 is gone. I said I wasn't sure, but it had to be lots. That child can eat 1 doz. eggs and a gallon of milk, all by his lonesome in one day.

Yep, spring is great.

Have oodles of outside work to do and a bit of school to wrap up. While kids were outside working today it rained the entire time.... except for when it hailed.

I saw that one of my two zucchini plants has a blossom on it. The rest of my squash and pumpkins are finally starting to take hold and grow and tonight we did a walk through on the orchard. Looks like a good crop of fruit this year. The cold weather kept the trees from blooming too early and all but a few have set fruit.

Even my tomato plants look great this year.
