The Old Folks Home

Lots of the land turtles, but our first snapper here. Would not make turtle soup unless i was starving. My Dad would though. Uck.
You can make mock turtle soup! I think it uses chicken

Read a while ago on the internet there was a dam in eminent danger in one of the Carolinas with mud slides all around. Hope it stays intact.

I saw that but don't recall which one either. But I also hope it holds up!
When I moved to Alabama the state was in a terrible flood stage.
The people were launching boats off the interstate off ramps to rescue folks.
The fire dept was going door to door rescuing people. The water was up to the interstate and you could on see the tops of a few trees. All the livestock had to be rescued and moved to higher land via helicopters. The state then opened 3 flood gates to relieve the pressure to keep the dams from breaking! However it flooded many more out of their homes! They said it was the worst flood ever and that was Dec 18th 1989.

Who was spitting wood today?

I was wondering what I was going to do with all my extra spare time. Not pictured: is a cord and a half of wood that's already seasoned that I have to move and restack in the house before I can stack this stuff outside to season for the last half of this winter and next winter. Got about two-thirds of that done this evening before my body said no more.

We get snappers and red ear slider turtles in the yard all the time digging nests to lay their eggs in. They drive the dog nuts.

Snapping turtle makes great fried turtle. Had it once. Sort off tastes like.....fish but the texture is more like chicken.

We are still in bad need of rain here. Looking at storms on Saturday so may bet some well needed precip then. I remember one morning we got up and every thing was soggy, in fact it was past soggy and just waterlogged. Turned on the radio and they were talking about roads being closed due to flooding. At that point we went out to check the rain gauge and it was over flowing. The last number on the gauge was 6 and it was past that. It had rained over 6 inches overnight in a single storm and we slept through it.

It's happened several more times since then but during daylight hours. We still laugh about the 'great flood' happening and we slept though it.

do you use a splitter? Or a maul?

I split with a maul. However, this was delivered pre-split, it's what I could find to purchase and believe it or not I could not trade a dozen eggs for it like I could the fiddleheads. There is a firewood shortage this year on account of the long/bad winter last year. Everyone had to dip into their stores and/or ran out early.
