The Old Folks Home

About the tree.

You have three potential angles that you can drop it. Either to the right of the apple to the left of the apple or behind the apple. Pick your best direction, make sure you have a clear area to drop the tree, make sure you have an escape route. What we have done is notch the tree deeply in the direction we want it to fall, then this is where the tractor comes in, we use tow ropes and heavy chains, one end attached to the tree the other to the tractor and we apply tension to the tethers. Only then do we make the final cut. The tree usually falls in the desired direction.

Without a tractor you can use a come along or a wench. with extended tethers. You have to make sure you have enough lee way so the tree doesn't drop on you. Safety first always. If in doubt hire it done.
I don't have a wench but I do have two 2 ton come alongs and a 1 ton winch on the garden tractor but there is no way I can get the tractor anywhere near the back of the tree. I could MAYBE get the cable up that direction with the GT at the edge of the woods but I'd have to get something from the tree around another tree behind it to use as a "turning block" for the cable. Not at all sure I have enough "material" to do that.

I'm thinking I'll need to connect to the tree some distance up to get it to fall away from the apple. Dropping to the side will hang it up in other trees and probably take out some of the apple, there is less of that to the rear. If really in doubt I'll just leave it and find another tree to make firewood from. We ARE talking about an apple tree that was probably "planted" by someone on a tractor driving by. But I figure it would be healthier with more sun. More potential apples for us and if not, for the deer and the subject tree would make good cordwood.

So the lady at TSC was most understanding and scanned the receipt then deleted out all the items, re entered them and then scanned the coupon. Saved me $30 which I then went and spent to fill the gas tank since I have to return my favorite oldest daughter to the airport this afternoon for her return to Maine. Gonna be a 5+hour evolution. We're going to check out a Philly cheese steak place for lunch on the way. Gotta leave here around noon.

That would be a pretty stiff wind @Latestarter ... and it would have to come from the East. That will never happen.

Couldn't you conveniently forget about the flight? Then you could keep her :D

The barn swallows fledged this morning. Luckily I got pictures yesterday. Babies (total of 4 I think) and parents:
