The Old Folks Home

I just got back from town. Fishtailed my way to the blacktop, skated home on a coat of greasy mud. Had a good laugh with the guy loading my van at MFA. I asked him if I had enough mud caked under the fenders and he said 'What? Mud in Missouri? We don't have mud in Missouri!' and we both broke out laughing.

If it is one thing that Missouri has, it's mud when it rains. Vicious mud that will suck the shoes right off your feet if you aren't careful...which is why I have muck boots.

When we get rock or gravel brought in, we started to notice that there was a lot of small marine fossils in the larger rock, and pieces of petrified coral in the gravel. I started doing research and learned that once upon a time, a saltwater sea covered most of the state.

Here at the farm, we have a lot of yellow clay under the top soil. The conservation officer that looked at our forest told us that the ridges are notorious for having poor soil quality.

Yeah, the house and barn set on top of a ridge. Go figure. Still we have managed to improve the depth of the top soil and have been careful to plant our fruit trees and garden where the corrals and goat pens used to be. So far the soil there has supported both the fruit trees and the garden.

Okay, been one of those days where silly works. Seriously, not being able to breathe is not fun. I've had my asthma kick up on bike rides and it can slow you down really fast. And that's from pollen that you can't see!

How in the world do people with allergies, asthma and emphysema get by breathing that contaminated air?!
