The Old Folks Home

The first time I heard that peroxide was bad was when my daughters had their belly buttons pierced. (shudder) They were 17, 18, and 19. That's what they wanted as a birthday gift. I picked a reputable place, and they got it done. I asked about after care, and mentioned peroxide, and/or triple antibiotic ointment. That's when I was told that was a no no. They had to use a sterile saline solution a couple times a day. If they were careful, that would do the job, however, in case it did get infected, they were to warm some vinegar in a shot glass, in the microwave, just enough so it was warm, not hot, and basically put the shotglass over the entire piercing, and let it stay on for a few minutes.

They all did fine except the youngest. I think she was doing drill practice with her rifle for JROTC, and the rifle slipped a little, and the barrel went in the opening between the two buttons, and the belly ring charm caught on the rifle. She didn't pull it out, but she pulled it pretty good, and it was still pretty fresh, so not healed up completely. (I had told her to put a band-aid over it for drill practice, but she didn't listen)

In a couple days, it wasn't doing so well, so she grabbed a shot glass, and the vinegar, then headed off to the bathroom. The scream could be heard 3 blocks away. Tears were still coming out of her eyes when she emerged from the bathroom. Yes, the vinegar did the job, but I know it hurt like the dickens. I never had to tell her to put a band-aid over it again.

So, I may have done something really dumb, but maybe not. I needed to spray my garden. I'm using Hi Yield 10% Permethrin - Indoor/Outodoor formula. It said mix 1 oz. to 4 gallons of water for my vegetables, and wait 5 days before eating them. Well, I put a little over 1 oz. in a 2 gallon sprayer, and sprayed it earlier.

It's rained the past couple days. It was not raining when I sprayed, but there was thunder, so I suspect it might rain before I get up in the morning. If not, the forecast is for rain tomorrow, and the next day, and the next. The last time I sprayed, I did it during the morning, and that evening it rained. The spraying didn't really do any good. That's what made me decide not to dilute it as much. What needed spraying most was my peas. I should have quite a few ready to pick over the next 2-3 days. They have a decent hull, and have to be shelled, so the spray doesn't really come into direct contact with the actual peas. Between the rain diluting, or washing off the spray, and the fact that it won't actually come into direct contact with the peas, I think it should be safe to pick the peas in a few days, shell, and eat them without a major risk.

What does everyone else think?

Usually if you read the label on the spray they will tell you the number of days to hold picking after you spray. I started using Captain Jack's formulas as they seemed to have the shortest time between spraying and picking. No problem this year as the harsh winter did away with 80% of our blackberries. They were resprouting from minor roots but the main plant was DOA so I told DH to mow them. I was tired of dealing with them and fighting mother nature over their survival.

Morning all. I'm sorry in advance for the vent but Ihad a totally lousey day yesterday. I woke up, got out of bed and my left knee erumpted. I barely made it to the bathroom and DH had to help me to the sofa where I spent the next half hour in tears from the pain and clutching an ice bag to my knee. Thank God it only lasted 1/2 hour but it was the longest half hour I've experienced in ages. It was so bad that the veins were popped out on my knee and it was radiating heat. DH bless him, set with me and when the worst of the pain had passed he asked me what I thought I had eaten that would cause a gout flare.

Thought about it, named off foods, all of them things I had eaten before, Spaghetti is okay as long as I use ground chicken or turkey in the sauce. Applesauce okay. Suddenly he remembered that I had eaten a bowl of Fresh Strawberries that I had picked out of my little berry bed that is FINALLY producing big plump berries.

I looked them up and sure enough. Strawberries are a BIG trigger for gout attacks. We had doctor's appointments and errands to run so I downed pain pills, grabbed my cane and off we went. With me not taking my medicine (still waiting for that call back) It was bound to happen but why my strawberries:hit I LOVE strawberries. DH is allergic to them and asked me what I was going to do with the berries that are ripening. May give them to the neigbor to make jam out of.

Learned one thing. People are very nice to you when you are limping, old and using a cane.

In the mean time, I was walking around Hy Vee trying to get groceries bought when the pain meds started to kick in. Kept debating on laying down in a quiet Isle and catching a quick nap so I knew it was time to get out of there. The knee is still bothering me some this morning but not nearly at the degree that it was yesterday.

All broodies have chicks under them. I did find one dead this morning. Chick looked okay and I'm afraid mom accidentally stepped on him/her. Another under the same hen is actively trying to leave this realm of existance. I pegged that one not to make it from the time it hatched as it had unabsorbed egg yolk sack hanging from it, and it's very thin and weak. Suspect that mom ruptered the sack and it wasn't able to absorb what was left. So she may be left with two chicks.

Busy day again today. Cooked the first hen for the dogs who will be thrilled with it, I'm sure and the best part of the day is NO RAIN! YAY! Not at least for the next week so late spring is finally here in North Eastern Missouri:ya

That is sad about the black berry plants and not getting to eat strawberries!

I hope the gout meds kick in quickly
