The Old Folks Home

We sold a motorcycle to a guy from California who said that it was based on mileage. As long as it didn't have more than 10,000 miles there would be trouble registering it. I think it was a 76 model.

My Mercedes is an 85, our VeeDub is an 86. No cats on either of them although the Mercedes from that year could be bought with a Cali converter on it.

We bought these cars due to their simplicity and lack of computer systems. They are both diesels and just keep chugging along.

Have fun shopping, everyone. I ran into town yesterday to pick up ice cream and a few odds and ins. Just finished mixing up bread since we have the stove going. For some reason my Amish sweet bread rises so much better when it is sitting by our wood stove.

I do most of my shopping online for everything other than perishables, including clothing. I hate shopping and going into the big stores is just over the top anymore when it comes to what my joints will take when it comes to walking. Our local Hy Vee puts the milk clear back in back corner of the store so you have to walk what seems like a half a mile in order to get to it. I may go back to using the Isles On Line they have, order on line and then have them toss them it the back of the van for me. I do enough walking at home.

Getting ready to pop a young cockerel in the crock pot. Yes, it's a milestone! Micro is going to actually eat one of her birds!

Never heard that before have to try it like on a counter?
Yes. try a raw egg and it will just fall over. A hard boiled egg will spin on its end.

We are smog tested every two years here and cannot get registration without it. The amount that a converter costs would not be made up for with a couple of miles per gallon better gas mileage.

It is a very sad situation....
I grew up in So. Cal in the 60's prior to catalytic converters and the clean air act. I will fight to my death any attempt to degrade the air quality standards now in place and would support any new ones. There were many days we could not go out for recess because of the air quality. When I moved into the dorm at school in '74 it was on the 3rd floor. EVERY trip up those stairs required a 20 minute "rest" period with burning eyes and lungs. When I moved to VT in '79 the lakes in the Adirondacks were dead from acid rain. Yes pollution coming from the midwest. There is a reason those smoke stacks were so high. As long as the "locals" didn't have to suck up the pollution they didn't give a rat's patootie what happened to the people and environment down wind.

The oozing and crusting have abated and now my face is all scabby. I look like a meth addict's mugshot without the skinny.
Well bummer that the skinny didn't come with the scabs.... but at least you still have teeth.

For cars, it is based on age. For the first 5 years you do not have to smog a car. After that, it is every two years. When it gets to a certain age, they make you go to a test only station which is more severe.

Motorcycles are not smogged here and do not have catalytic converters.

There are also differences based on where you live in California. In smog impacted areas it is like where I live. Up North and in the Bay area, the requirements are less restricted.

It is crazy complicated.

I was born and raised in a small city on the Illinois river. Lots of industry on the river itself. I used to tell people that midwest feeds the world and yep, it sure does.

Unfortunately, power being produced in the power plants there is providing the populations all over the country with electricity and every time you gas up your car there is a chance that the ethanol came from the heartland of Illinois. As long as there is a demand for the products being produced, whether it be food or electricity there is going to be air pollution and the last time I checked nobody was willing to go back to the technology of the early 1800s.

Look at China. Horrible, horrible air quality, probably the worse in the world. Still we continue to support the sweatshops that make up the industrial workforce there every time we buy something that is 'made in China'.

Once again, nobody is willing to give up their cell phones, their stylish clothing, their hybrid autos, air conditioning, electricity or the convenience of going to the store for groceries.

I just keep hoping that nobody falls asleep and their finger accidently presses that 'Reset' button when they doze off.
