The Old Folks Home

Mine are slowly stating to lay again. They are molting weird this year. Some seemed to lose big clumps of feathers but nothing catastrophic like I've seen in the past. They are slowly starting to lay again. And my little Pterodactyl hen named Screech is broody again. So is Mini Mouser. Screech is just so funny. Get your hand near her and she opens up her beak as wide as she can and lets out this God Awful scream that I swear they can hear in town. I have no idea how such a little two pound hen can create such a noise. I'm hoping the colder weather will snap them out of it. I would hate to have to put them in a broody buster.

I'll probably never know what happened to Twonk. He took his job so seriously that I wonder if the stress just didn't do him in. My oldest rooster is 3.5 years old now. He is happy to stay in the coop and let the younger roosters handle things. Smart bird. He will probably outlive all of them.

So sorry to hear of dead hens and roosters! Reminds me that I mustn’t take good health for granted in my girls.

I did a project tonight! My daughter complained that my 17-month-Old granddaughter (Frankie) threw a tantrum this morning when she tried to get socks on her. And every other item of clothing. The change from hot weather to cold, we think.

I suggested writing a little book about wearing clothes to keep warm, but DD thought it was a great idea but didn’t have the energy for it. So I made a PowerPoint using photos of Frankie, chickens, my dog under his blankets and huddled by the fire, and the fall colors! It’s fabulous, if I do say so myself.

I emailed it off tonight. Excited! Hoping for no tantrum tomorrow!

I have a hen I should name screech! A black bantam cochin.

That’s awesome!! Sounds like a cute little book. :love

Sorry to hear of all the loses.

Its fall, and feathers are flying everywhere here. Not ready for winter. Still a couple groups of chicks and ducklings that need to feather out to handle the cold. Im never ready for winter.... lol

The funny thing about my Screech is that every time she throws open her beak and lets out her yell I think of this....

Molting is a bit late at my place. One is molting now but the others are not. The Blue egg layers are still laying eggs too. They will likely stop in a couple of weeks though. Daylight hours drop too low for eggs at that time
