What filter medium did you use? gravel or sponge or floss or a combo?

What I did after a lot of hit and miss was buy a bag of quilt batting and cut a large square that I loosely wrapped around my filter. I found that kept the pea gravel from clogging the impellers on the pump. Then I would just use pea gravel to fill the bucket to about 3 or 4 inches from the top. Then I would put some larger stones, maybe 2 inches at the most, on top of the pea gravel to keep the fish from mouthing around in the gravel looking for tidbits. I could tell when the filter needed flushed when the flow rate would slow down. The batting material would be nasty with silt. Just tossed it, flushed the gravel until clear then refill the bucket. I kept two buckets on hand. It made cleaning easier.

Awesome.... I am considering something similar for my aquaponics system. I used to use under gravel filters in my tanks... Which is a similar system with the added Floss and a bucket makes it easy to clean up...

That silt is accumulated waste material being consumed by aerobic bacteria... the floss gives mega surface area for the bacteria to take hold...

with my under-gravel filter in place I rarely had to clean the tank... I used external physical filtration for that job. I did do partial water changes though. A 110 is considered a show tank they are four feet wide by four feet tall and eighteen inches deep. Surface area ratio causes it to have less capacity than a long tank. So extra filtration and aeration is required.

How many estimated gallons did you have in that pond.?

I am working on a couple of ideas.... oNe for treating grey water and one for Treating a duck waiding pool

It was 8X4X3 so it was approximately 750 gallon but I think I did a more precise calculation when I dug it and it was closer to 800 gallons. It had an upper pool which was a little preformed job with a small waterfall from the upper pool to the lower pool and a fountain. I have pictures of it but I would have to scan them into the computer somehow. Will have to ask DH.

I loved that pond. It had the best ecology going on it of any of my ponds. I started digging it when I went to work at the rehab center in IL and would come home at 11 pm, go out to the yard and shovel dirt out of frustration and stress. The liner was pvc. I edged it with flagstone.
